Wouldn't really be an issue still. Hardware today is quite efficient.

Lmao. Linkworld is in the Tier 5 altho it worked for my system for almost 7 years without any malfunctions. I guess I got lucky?
Btw I don't see any Aerocool VX series in the list, I recently bought VX-550W which seems to be... ok? I see some Aerocools in Tier 4 which is eeh kinda safe judging by the list? Anyway I'd like to know someone's opinion about this.

Thing about psus, and that list, is that they are tools, and only as good as a) the person using them and b) using the tool for the intended purpose.
I had a Dell pc for years, ran just fine on its Bestec psu (same quality of build as the Linkworld basically) but it was never subjected to the stresses of high demand gpus. Until I changed the gpu from a cheapo amd to the x800 which doubled the demand. Supposedly within limits, the psu lasted less than a week.
The same battle happens everyday here, namely the Corsair CX. it's actually a decent psu for stock replacement, but even Corsair says on their web page that it's not intended for gaming use. Yet ppl still buy them for that purpose because they are cheap brand recognized and then are surprised when they last only 6 months, or get mad when ppl call them junk. Just misuse of the tool. It's the CX incompatibility to gaming that drops it to tier 4, when under normal usage they'll last for years.
The list was comprised of psus for gaming pc's, high demand workstations etc. I personally think ppl are fools for spending $500 on an over sized gpu then cringing about spending $90 for a good psu, when for $60 they can get a higher wattage, low tier psu. But, you get what ya pay for in the end.

Corsair CX units are not incompatible with gaming. That's an absurd claim.

Maybe the old green CX units tend to wear out too quickly if you put them under a heavy load all the time. But that's more likely for people running non-gaming workloads - whether Folding@Home or crypto mining etc.

And in any case, heavy load is relative to the wattage the unit is rated for. There's no point making a Corsair CX850M if CX units are only for basic office usage. Because 850W is extremely ridiculous overkill for that kind of system.

The problem is...Corsair is a respected, well known name. RAM, cases, PSU, etc, etc.
So one might automatically think Corsair = good PSU.

My now-dead z77 motherboard would take issue with that, after suffering the wrath of a CX600.

Obviously, my sample size of one is of no consequence.

Heck those Dells last a long time. Go into any school and you'll find a ton of Dells that have been there over ten years.

The truth of the matter is the PSUs we consider "crappy" we consider crappy mainly because we are hardware enthusiasts on Tomshardware. Those Dell PCs probably never see daylight over 50W of power draw let's be honest, those power supplies if anything are more than well built for the purpose they serve.

Most Dell id agree, the psu is more often than not a Delta unit, so are well able to last forever. Unfortunately, mine was a replacement before I got it. The Bestec was decent, until I loaded with that radeon x800, then it took a crap.

Sakkura, I'm quite sure you are knowledgeable enough to know that there's a considerable difference between the sustained loads of folding@home and the instantaneous heavy surges common to powerful gpus.
Quote from Corsair:

CX-M AND CX SERIES
CX-M and CX Series PC power supplies are an excellent choice for basic system builds and desktop PC computer upgrades.

Now I don't claim to know the reasoning behind the 750 850w CX, but as far as I'm concerned, any pc with a top line cpu and gpu(s) needing 850w is definitely not a basic build and should absolutely not be powered by a CX. It's intended purpose is a factory replacement or basic upgrade. It's not until you get to the HX/HXi series that Corsair announces that those units are designed for gaming use with OC.

Marketing fluff is of no consequence.

Folding@home uses GPUs too, and depending on the work unit can be a very heavy load. Games are much milder on the power supply.

If you have the choice between a high-quality 600W unit and a Corsair CX850M (green version), sure the former is the better choice. But the latter won't really be an issue either.

Funny thing about choices there's always at least one more. There are no high quality 600w psus, you get the choice of 550w 620w or 650w, but no 600's. So my choice would be to sit put for another month, forgo wasting money on that green CXM, and buy a Seasonic.

It's a dare! Find a high quality 600w psu. That means something that would place at least tier 2a, but more likely tier 1. And it's gotta be a psu that would be available for public sale/use in a pc. Not some uber expensive, little known server type psu. ATX standard if you please.

This should be good....

Oh, might see if you can drag up either a 500w, 700w or 800w while you are at it, cuz I've not seen those ever, either. Always see the x50w psus are high quality, beyond 850w that changes.

How is the new VS series?

I win! Doesn't seem to be available yet though.

1000 W
850 W
750 W
650 W
600 W Fanless

:)

You're right though in that they are unusual.

Is it bad to have overkill on PSU?

Specs: AMD FX-4300 @ 3.8Ghz | MSI 760GMA-P34 FX | Stock 2x4GB DDR3 | 1TB SATA III HDD
| EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti 2GB GDDR5 | Corsair CX650M 650W 80 Plus Bronze

I have these specs posted under my personal info in profile under computer setup. Why isn't it showing in my signature area?

Don't really know at this point. All we know is made by HEC I think. Jonnyguru says they're better than EVGA's low end units (I'll believe him, he doesn't seem to show bias when he really talks on the forums about products). I've also seen him admit the new VS is still cheap and not that good. So whatever.

Seems this thread has a lot of info http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13667&page=2
