I still haven't chosen a PSU.

I can't make sense of the XFX series.. why does the XXX 850W Gold edition and the XTS versions have the same product number P1-850B-BEFX?

Because it's the same product being sold under different series names in different parts of the world.

XFX has been transitioning some of the remaining old product series (Classic Series: XXX Edition, Pro Series: Core Edition, XXX Edition/Black Edition, Black Edition Full Modular, Black Edition Limited) models into the equivalent new product series (XTS Series Platinum Full Modular, XTR Series Full Modular, TS Series Full Wired).

Here's something I've wondered, why do you never see anything other than frame transformers in computer PSU's and never any other transformer types e.g. toroidal?

And another thing.. it seems to me there is also a lot of hype.. everyone hyping the Super Flower Leadtex based EVGA Supernova G2. I might get one but who on earth thought naming a PSU after the explosion of a large star was a good idea? I mean, I know the death of a star takes billions of years but was that really a good name for a PSU? If I get one will I void the warranty if I peel of the damn sticker? I don't want to be reminded of when my Tagan went BIG bang, that just took a second. No nova, just BANG! The Enermax went 10 years pretty much 24/7 before it just went pop. That Enermax 701 Noisetaker was built like a brick poo house. Nothing died downstream other than the PSU both times though... so I guess they had good output protection or I got lucky.. that Enermax was an amazing buy though. Why they no longer da man?

Anyone have the XFX XTR 850 or compare it side by side with the Supernova G2? How long are the XFX cables? XFX's PSU part of their website is hopeless...

I really only need 500W max.. but I just believe bigger supplies than you need last longer and are more future proofed maybe..

The 850 G2 seems pretty much sold out all over the UK though...

Toroidal core transformers are much more expensive to manufacture. There's too much competition in the PSU market to use much more expensive components than your competitors. If your product isn't selling because it's too expensive, compared to the competition, it just doesn't make any business sense.

In reality there are two revisions of CM V550s . Old revision include secondary capacitors Teapo/su'scon, new revision is 100% japanese capacitors. http://www.hardwareinsights.com/wp/cooler-master-v550s-revised-and-better-than-before/ :)

But some things in these tier list I don't understand...
For example why Superflower Golden Silent tier 1 and Silent Night 500 with identical platform tier 2?
Why Corsair rm,cs,cx all tier 3, when in reality rm is better than cx(dc-dc, semipassive mode, better fan etc)?

It might be better, but still not good enough to warrant being in the higher tier. As said before, there are other things aside from simply the platform used that determine where a PSU ranks in relation to other units. Two units using the same platform might have different fans, different cabling or different exterior grill designs that cause one to be louder than another. Lot's of things can affect how units compare to each other besides strictly the internal platform. Even units with the same basic platform might have some core differences when it comes to component selection, cooling schemes or other factors.

The 850W G2 EVGA supernova is impossible to get in the UK at the moment.. are there any poorer components in the Superflower Leadtex equivalent? Quite like the white one.

Hello! im using a "be quiet! Pure Power L8-CM-730W" and i upgraded to an "Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte" and since now and then my gpu driver keeps crashing while playing games. i did a clean driver reinstall with DDU multiple times, the problem only occured during overcloking but today it happend while being at Default. im not sure if i should RMA the card or buy a new PSU since my PSU is listed as Tier 3 here.

The be quiet! Pure Power L8 730W CM's voltage regulation on the +3.3V rail is horrible. It will drop below what is allowed by ATX12V specs (i.e. < +3.14V) during load transitions when you're drawing over 25~30% of the PSU's full load.

Try testing with a better quality PSU to see if it resolves the problem.

The picture showing that little red input voltage selector switch is a dead giveaway that it is just the plain VP450 with no APFC. Also the 80 PLUS database does not have an entry for the VP450. Only the VP450F and VPF450 are in the database.
