I choose my case and peripherals based on how easy it will be to transport them to a LAN party. ... is that bad...

not for an age. last time i did it was my full tower system and 20'' CRT
add the extras and it was near 200 lb of gear. never again was my thoughts. then i hosted a few small ones.

i still have that same old tower case with drives pouring out the side. the farthest that thing has moved in years is 12'' forward on the desk to pull the MB tray.

I used to attend a monthly LAN party here in the Houston area, but that was many years ago. When I did, it was a heavy mid tower and 19" CRT (plus the usual peripherals and input devices). There are no big LAN parties in this area anymore. I wish there were, though.

Haven't done it in years. Back when 33.6k was awesome internet speed and a 16 meg video card was sweet sweet graphics, I used to get together with friends for a nice night of Warcraft II or something. We later upgraded to Starcraft, then Unreal Tournament (which I still love to play). Once Steam was invented, there really isn't much need for it anymore. It's way too difficult to get everybody together, mostly for everybody's wives to allow it. I do most of my gaming online in short 1 hour spurts when the kids are asleep and the wife is otherwise occupied.

Used to, then I grew up and found I didn't have time to set aside an entire day/evening to do this. A buddy's dad was principle at an elementary school, we used to go there after hours every day and play all night. Ah, the good 'ol days of Doom, Duke, and Starcraft......

I used to take my PC over to a friend's house to play lan games. But lugging around the 22" crt was a royal pain at best.

Eventually I moved away. Then the crt died and now I have a nice flatscreen.

Havent in a while. Used to host a lot.

For y'all complaining about the weights of your towers: this signifies that you need to hit the gym!

waa waa 43 pounds!

boo hooo its too heavy to carry around!

BARF you disgust me! 🙁

While I've got a mini P180 for my main rig (smallish), it's firmly ensconced within its desk enough that I don't move it. For LAN's, I unplug my HTPC (which is now an ex-HTPC, displaced by the new DVR 🙁 at the fiancee's request) and easily bring it around.
nsk1380
Intel dg31pr
e8400
9800 GT
2x2GB RAM
1x500GB HD (room for two more)
1xmulti-DVD thing.
and your random wireless card

I've discovered though, through LAN's, that it gets a bit choked up on heat after a couple hours 🙁

Yes I do! I founded with one of my friends the actual LAN party in the college I went. It's still alive and gets 60-80 peoples twice a year. Now I moved out to attend university, but I still love to get back there to see old friends.

I go to one every month and bring 3 of my desktops, monitors and all my equipment. Depending on what is being played I might not play on any of them (not much of a FPS guy) but I have a great time and feel good that my machine can provide fun for other people too that show up without a machine.

I used to LAN with friends a couple years ago. There is nothing better than yanking your opponents CAT5 cable after he filled you full of holes tbqh, except for maybe, yanking it just before he fills you full of holes.

Back in college didn't have any problems lugging around my full tower with the plexi window blue LEDs, 8 case fans, luckily i had a 17 lcd monitor, only one of my friends who wasn't running a crt.

Now that i bought a decent laptop, cafe's and lan parties are no problem. My home pc is too much now with the 22", plus its not as flashy as my old one and i hate to undo all my cable management 😛

[citation][nom]BallistaMan[/nom]Done a few small scale LAN parties, but like a number of people have mentioned, I'm terrified that I'm going to kill my computer hauling it around. When in the car I have it surrounded by a towel and then resting on 6 inch padding with pillows holding it in place.Yes I'm that paranoid.[/citation]

Either you'll be fine, or you should really rethink your ability to build a PC... I used to haul mine around several times a week. I'd get a call at midnight letting me know the LAN party was starting and I'd tear my setup down, load it in the car, drive to the place and set it all up. Was quite fun. I really miss those spur of the moment LAN parties... 🙁
