[citation][nom]balister[/nom]Ummm...does anyone remember the prices for Vista when it came out? If you do like I do, you'd realize that MS is charge less for Windows 7 than Vista when Vista launched. Vista Ultimate was $400, yet Windows 7 Ultimate is being launched at $320.
Those that are saying they bought Vista for less than the above prices have purchased Vista in the last year or so when MS dropped the price or got a deal through some outlet/bought an OEM version.
Overall, full version to full version, Windows 7 is priced less than Vista when Vista was launched.[/citation]
It's not just Vista, either. 7's Home Premium cost the same dollar amount as the original XP Home did on launch. Same with XP and 7's Pro versions. Adjusted for inflation, the real cost for XP was over 20% greater than we're getting 7 for today.

[citation][nom]primerump[/nom]why buy ?.. just wait for the cracked version on torrents.[/citation]

at least if you wanna pirate, don't mention it on here.

No operating system should cost more than $120. Especially considering how often they've released them lately. Also the competition costs WAY less and can do just about everything better than any version of Windows. The only reason to even have windows any more is access to gaming... and I'll be sure to purchase every major developer releasing content for linux.

Rip-Off!....I will be installing a pirated edition of 7 Ultimate for free...probably after the first service pack is released...sure I risk the getting an infected copy but that's the chance I have to take...to this date I have never purchased ANY OS not even XP. And YES I have installed infected versions....can we all say Windows XP Black? Hell, I've even had copies that disallowed security updates. But like I said, that's the chance you take with pirate software...you just gotta keep trying different copies. If Linux would just figure out how to run software written for windows I would become more honest...until then, PIRATES RULE!!!

No, I want to see a pre-order discounted price on windows 7 ultimate.
It's not fair only the other versions get it.
I need the Business aspects cause I work in IT I also want the more robust multimedia features in Home Premium.
So.. I'm getting ultimate for eleventy billion dollars.

twice in a row...I'm really letting my attention to detail show!...LOL!

upgrade? who needs to upgrade? I'm sticking with Vista. I got all the kinks worked out and now it runs better than XP.

[citation][nom]IzzyCraft[/nom]I love how people suggest pricing schemes for Microsoft, pretty dam sure their price is to maximize profits between vista, windows 7 and pirated copies.Face it most people who pirate shit don't care what price it is even it's at 20 dollars a pop they still don't want to pay money for things they can steal, it's just easier for them to justify stealing it by the large price for it, face it they are just cheap people with low moral standards. Hell most people would be good with OEM retail only counts for enthusiasts who reactive windows 2-5 times a year for various reasons, formats and new parts etc.The prices are good enough for me, not necessarily happy but when i see a torrent for windows xp and vista downloaded over 10k times i see where they need to make up money.[/citation]

It makes sense to me because why would people buy Vista after Windows 7 comes out? They should just stop selling Vista (still support it for people who run it), and sell Windows 7. Businesses have had plenty of time to test it, its more secure and its faster.

On the note of pricing I think for people who already have Vista they should charge $49 and $99. I say this because Vista wasn't a blockbuster seller and to give good initiative for people to buy it those should be the regular prices for upgrade (or at least for digital download upgrade and make the physical disk $65 and $120). I have a friend who has 3 computers. I told her about the pre-release and she...being layman home user...doesn't feel comfortable putting beta software on her computer. I know many people who feel the same way. Plus if I didn't tell her that Windows 7 was in Beta she would never have known. So she's going to think about buying it when it comes out, but only for her sons computer because she can't afford for all 3. How many people are actually finding out about the free beta? How many are willing to try it out or even know how to after downloading know how to put an ISO on a DVD (Or even know what an ISO file is). So first people need to know about the Beta, then they need to know how to install the beta via ISO. Most people unless they know someone isn't going to do that. Then they have to hear about the special offer, which unless they know someone like you or I probably won't be reading about it because you mention tech to a lot of people and they're eyes just glaze over. This is why I'm saying they should keep...for people using vista...the price low. They can have regular price for full version, thats fine.

I'm not going as far as GenKhan2 who's saying the price should be almost free. I know MS has to make money off of it since they are a software developer. They will make up the money by selling to Corps, OEM's and people who are going to buy the full version. I think by selling the upgrade at a higher price will ultimately fail because people will figure they'll stick with XP or if they're happy with Vista. Its all about marketing and trying to get people to buy Windows 7 and want to upgrade from XP.

NO, it isn't fair to those of us who bought a legit copy of any version of Vista. People who purchased Vista were promised a lot and received very little. Vista was and still is full of bugs, random crashes and compatibility issues. MS tried a few times to fix it, then gave up to start work on yet another operating system. I feel like MS basically told me and everyone else that bought Vista, "Sorry for the pos OS that you just paid a premium price for and to make it up we are willing to sell you a brand new OS at a premium price" In summation, thanks , but no thanks MS, Until Windows 7 is free to those who legaly purchased Vista.

Yes. Its fair.
Do I even need to say it? Because you will pay for it.
Do I need to point out why you will pay for it? Because you like the product.

The preorder price is outstanding at $49.00. 5 years ago I paid $49.00 for XP upgrade, used it for 4 years and then sold it on ebay for $70.00. Dah, how can you lose?

[citation][nom]chripuck[/nom]A. I have stock in Microsoft so I'm happy they're "ripping" us off.[/citation]

Well that works out for you. Okay, so everyone should be stock in MS and the demand a price restructuring.

$10 for the ultimate version would be fair. anything more than that is a rip off.

These are really high prices! I am really disappointed but hopefully maybe these prices are lowered sometime after the market release.
Until than i think i'll keep Windows XP which is working perfectly.
Anyway i'll wait for people feedback on stability and compatibility to decide to move for Windows 7. I won't do the Vista mistake again to install it right away... :-(

This is a reply to Geibys post above.
If you were participating in the BETA testing program, you will receive an email with especial pricing, I already did get it.

I did not get Vista but I think all Vista costumers should get Windows 7 gratis, free of any cost.

If people are going to compare Windows 7's price to that of Leopard's, then I would gladly pay the extra $70 for the freedom to install it on any hardware I want.

They are definitely higher than I'd like, especially considering it costs Microsoft NOTHING EXTRA to sell you a version of Ultimate over Home Premium. Home Premium is just a crippled Ultimate anyway.

In truth, I'd like to see a mirror of Vista's licensing costs, which were already high, especially given the two to four year lifespan of the software. This is what forces people to hunt down OEM copies and steal them online.

I know MS response is "well no one was saying that you have to buy Windows 7," but consider if you bought a car five years ago, needed a new one, then the dealer decided that the every car needs to cost $100,000 or more (and I'm thinking your average Toyota or Ford here). The only thing the consumer can do is buy used or steal. If MS wants people to pay for upgrades, a little more sensible pricing scheme makes sense.

$99 for the full version of home premium, $159 for Pro and $299 for Ultimate makes the most sense.

[citation][nom]cabose369[/nom]This isn't Apple... there are no "Family Packs"[/citation]

True, It's Microsoft, expect to get screwed every once in a while...I can't lie...all the time.

I just bought a Vista Ulitimate Upgrade for $200. now, i have to buy a W7 upgrade for $300 or do a reinstall. I would pay $100 more but $300 for an OS!!! If Apple were smart, they would sell OSX on the PC right now and Slam MSFT!
