well you see the thing is I love outdoors and I love to go cycling for the 5 months of the year I can. the other 7 months I can't get outside in 2 feet of snow and average temperatures of 30 degrees fahrenheit which is below freezing for most days so for that reason I say no. Electronics depend on mindset I only play avideo game if I have absolutely nothing better to do. And in the brutal winters where I live that's the case most days.

Maybe not ban, but for one I'd ask my phone company to disable texting on the phones , and I'd set a time limit on the router with a password , so your only allowed on the internet between 3 and 7 unless you have the password. As for games.... I'll have to figure that one out, I'll probably have to tell them it's within the same time period as the router.

Seeing as I have no kids right now I don't have to worry.

Funny how people say, that in order to be viable in the "real world", one must be adept in using portals to the the virtual one.

We did without a television for 5 years during our children's early school years. This was difficult for myself and my wife, but it paid dividends as both children have done very well at school and university.

Kids all say No, Adults always say maybe, Parents say hell yes.

It is, like it or not, a freaking huge problem. Studies show that kids who spend to much time on computers, cell phones, consoles, or any other entertainment device, don't do as well in school, have more aggressive behavior, and higher levels of ADD, and ADHD.

While i think this is a little extreme, coming out of the eighties where technology was just on the rise, I learned how to do things both ways, with and without technology. Therefore, I can understand the good things of growing up with limited exposure to technology; In particular, the social aspect of it.. It would seem that todays kids are unable to socialize in what is dubbed by people over 28 a normal way. Kids today will actually stand in a circle and text each other at the fucking starbucks as opposed to talk.

Banning all gadgets seems a bit excessive. Sure, having an excess of technology draws away from spending time together as a family. But it also allows you to maintain a connection with the outside world at the end of the day.

Sounds to me like the parents were to lazy to work with their kids activities. It's much easier to deny something than it is to make it a learning adventure. Computers can be a great tool for learning. To ignore their existence is to stick your head in the sand. I agree with chuckdalton. A balanced approach to life is much wiser approach.

Banning tech is a form of escapism- it simply means the parents are incapable of teaching kids not to overdo things. My parents have never put any restrictions on tech usage(cept a ban on porn). Doesn't affect me in the least. During summer hols, I usually game like a freak. School days, rarely more than an hour or so. Exam time? Zero. Only open the machine to access my music, since my parents don't trust me with a cell/mp3....their logic is that a desktop is too big to lose...

phuck no, in this day in age we depend too much on technology, so why not use it. it makes things that much better, you just have to know how to use all technology in moderation.

[citation][nom]Ratiocinative[/nom]I always find it hilarious when people try to blame their lack of self-control on inanimate objects. Sure, spending all your time on electronic devices is bad, but so is never coming in contact with them. Virtually all professions use computers or other electronic devices in at least some capacity, so it's a useful skill to have.If your kids are spending all their time on electronic devices, then the problem is with your kids not the electronics. Teach them some self-control and you won't have that problem.[/citation]

Actually, if your kids are spending all of their time on electronic devices, the problem is mostly with you. You as a parent need to ensure your children are developing and growing into the well-behaved, well-adjusted young men and women they should be.

[citation][nom]eatmeimadanish[/nom]Parents are able to raise their kids anyway they want, as long as the kids grow up to be normal. Their methods should not be subject to our opinions, however the outcome should be since this innevitably effects us.[/citation]
But what is normal?

I grew up without TV until I was 10 or so, and computers after that. I now watch basically no TV (and am happy about it) and am very computer literate. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

WTF? they see there friends face to face now? Like the gadgets were keeping them indoors... The gadgets are just there, they were the ones who are responsible for not getting out, not the gadgets. They could still be computer literate and have a life... In a world full of gadgets, this must have set them back by quite a few decates

come one, this is bs. bannging computers and cell phones is ridiculous, banning the gaming consoles is actually somewhat of a good idea. computers are very useful if you use them for what youre supposed to be using them for, and cell phones are useful for emergencies.

banned the computer??? why, it is good in this day and age its good to know how to turn on your computer. I do hate it when ppl cant even cut and paste. I would give a kid a phone unless it was set up to only call the house or my cell (which i dont have a cell, there pointless) I like video games myself, but do think you should watch how much you play it can ruin you social life. Going from one point to another. I do belive this is just a case of the parents not knowing what they where doing giving the 10 year old a cell phone, (I don't know why they sent a nude pic of themselves.) and the next thing you know you daughter is going to jail for child porn of her or even him. Opps wait that was last weeks story. lol ..... done with my rant :)

no matter where i go and no matter who i see ( whether at home or out in public ) everybody is staring at some screen or another . the screen may be small ( phone or ipod ) or the screen might be large ( television or computer ) . this madness has got to end soon . the world population's attention has been diverted by colorful glowing pixels away from the true natural path to satisfaction productivity and happiness . we are in the midst of a mass hysteria . turn off the gadgets now and restart your life .

do ban consoles with indicting environments for my 6 year old. computer use is allowed, linux and windows with appropriate content. i have been feeding him google, pictures, wiki and sketchup an Microsoft paint. i been expanding his mind with NASA, aircraft and automobiles. bigger better faster! Also with ton's of General technology from how computers work to power grids.

Believe it or not there was a time where people actually functioned quite well without computers, cell phone, internet. What is going to happen when the prices rise so much that no one can afford the cost of the access time? I suppose that some of you think that won't happen.Don't judge how these people raise their children IT'S NOT UP TO YOU. Mind your own business and try not to screw up your own life.

I already managed to get rid of our cable tv and cell phones..But as my primary job is in the IT sector I don't think I will ever be able to get rid of my computers.

i'd just ban any ipod products from my home...and cell phones from my kids unless they are like in highschool.

computers are fine, but even that shouldn't be in their bedroom cuz then GOD knows what the hell they'd be looking up.
