Quad core confusion

I have a quick qestion about the i7 or quad core CPU's in genral. When a quad core CPU is rayed for 2.66 ghz does that mean each core runs at 2.66 ghz. Or does it mean that the processor has a combined speed of 2.66 ghz? Any advice will be appreciated.

It means that each core is at 2.66 GHz, but that does not mean that the CPU is actually a 10.64 GHz CPU, it doesn't stack like that.
