So every mobo has this list with "qualified" brands and models, but what exactly is this? Would a stick that is not on the list have some sort of compatibility issues? Run slower?

The QVL is a list of Ram which has been tested by the motherboard manufacturer... Memory not listed will most likely work, however if you choose off that list it is almost certain the ram will function as planned.

You will notice on the list that some brands of ram dont like to play well together if using more then 2 sticks, where others run just fine with 4 sticks.

I for one choose from the list, I hate returning stuff.

Tested at no charge? Yes.

Paid to have their product tested and listed? Yes.

Smells of kickbacks and backroom deals? Oh yes.

qvl is joke

i rotate venders and never look at qvl and build 3-4 systems per week myself at max - or 1 a month min

while i do stock many kinds and somtimes you may need a certain brand that will work better - the fact is the better ram works in almost all mobos and the crap is the problem the lists are worthless for the most part.

go to newegg and read the posts

if the ram is 50-60 rated 5 and 70-80% rated 4 and 5 - then its good

most problems with ram is with the user, or the ram is low end

good ram: muskin, ocz, corsair, super talent, patriot
not sure crucial, patiort (ya 2 times)
not so good: gskill, adata,

THE GOLDEN RULE OF RAM -- WORKS FOR ALL RAM!

You want low voltage, low latency ram, mid speed
