(number at the end of each line is cost from Newegg and Zipzoomfly, respectively)

All of the above chips are made with the Micron D9GMH IC. Yet, they are all branded differently (and obviously priced differently) based on design, frequency and latency. The PC6400C3DF, for example, cost $463 from Newegg and is usually not available. Others have better availability at a lower price. The question is: if one purchases a PC8500C5D, couldn't this chip run at any of the above frequency and timing? From DDR2-800, CL3 to DDR2-1142, CL5?

If one is able to do so, would it not make sense to buy the lowest cost (handpicked) chip in the group and just run it at your preferred speed and timing?

Just asking ... not too knowledgeable about Micron chips.

Chips vary. Even within a batch of the same type of chip, some will be better/faster than others. They need to be tested to figure out which are which, and the better ones usually get put on the more expensive/faster modules.

Also keep in mind that those particular rev might be hard to find.

I would advise to get whatever's got GMH at the cheapest price!

Unless you go into more specific detaisl liek your OC goal and other components, pretty much the only advice you need!
