Hello friends,

How are you, I am a technician of laptops and computers and I would like to do a project with my laptop. People in my country say that I do not know anything, that does not work the world as I think, so I decided to resort to TomHardware for the last verdict to tell me you.

I tell you the case detail; I have an Olivetti P1420, as you may know, Olivetti stopped making laptops around 2011, I currently have a Pentium B960, a 2nd generation Intel Pentium, Sandy Bridge. The chipset on the motherboard of my laptop is HM65, My bios is America MegaTrends Inc. version 4.6. 4 and the microcode of my CPU is 0X2f.

My intention was to remove the Pentium B960 and upgrade to the Core I7 2640M. It has the same TDP as the Pentium B960 which is 35W, and the socket of both processors is the same, the PGA988, I would like the opinion of expert like you on my idea

thank you all for reading me

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Here's a list of processors supported by the HM65 chipset;

The other thing you need to keep in mind, is that, if the laptop maker's had a whitelist for the processor support then it's possible some processors might not be supported.

I should point out that your approach is good, since you're trying to stick with the same TDP as your current processor. I would advise looking at some high quality thermal paste and pads when you're reinstalling the cooling solution, not to mention to clean the venting on the laptop's cooler so you're not impeded thermally and performance wise.
