I got this from Gigabyte today, I guess I'll believe them but something does not fill me with confidence in their answer.

Dear customer,

With latest bios F10c updated 980 should works.

Best Regards,

Gigabyte technical support team.

If its updated enough to support the X4 975 and X6 1100t it'll support the X4 980. I'd bet money on it. The X4 975 is exactly the same chip as the X4 980. The 980 is just clocked a 100 Mhz higher.

BIOS F10c was released in September of 2010. The X6 1100t wasn't released until December of 2010. The X4 975 wasn't released until January of 2011. The important thing is they added support for C3 stepping Phenom II models a year earlier with a BIOS update (which all of those including the X4 980 are).

The 980 should work, as it is the 975 just clocked 100Mhz higher and has a different name. The only thing is it may require a BIOS update.

The 980 and 975 even have the same max TDP, so if the board supports one, it should support the other. The board is getting older, so they probably just haven't updated the list in a good while and the 980 just doesn't appear there.

If I were in your situation with the same board and all, I would go for it.

Hope this helps! ;)
