I purchased one in December (2TB) but it's unopened and waiting on me to build my new system. I haven't installed it on my current system because the mother board doesn't have heat sinks for it and my new one will, so I don't want to glue a heat sink onto the drive.

If it has the bad version of the firmware, is it fine as long as it's not in use and I update it when I start using it, or does the problem impact it just by....existing? Do I need to temp throw it in my current computer with no heat sink, and update it's firmware now?

Thanks for reading.

It will be fine, the issue only occurs if the drive is in use. If it turns out to be one of the problematic drives just ensure to update the firmware to the latest version as soon as possible after putting it into use.
