i have a pctel hsp56k modem but everytime i connect i only get a connected at 33,600 bps. is there something wrong with my modem or is it my phone line?
I actually have the exact same problem. Mine is actually a combination of both. A poor ISP and old phone lines. I've never connected over 33.6. 28.8 is the norm here.
The bottom line is, your modem does not dictate the speeds you will achieve. Many factors are invilved including your isp's capabilities, the condition of your phone lines, distance from the nearest node, weather and many others. Also, don't expect to ever reach a true 56k speed since it's theoretically impossible over standard phone lines using a modem.
