quick noob question - modem internet

Hey I have my Internet setup through a modem to a router but want to setup a connection between the Modem and just my Laptop. How do I go about doing that. When I just hook it up and it's on "Obtain IP" it says Limited or no connectivity which it would.

How do I go about setting up a connection between just the modem and laptop to access the Internet. How do I get the Default gateway and IP, Do you just assign yourself one or how I do that? Thanks for your help

If your want to hook up more than one computer to the internet, the easiest way to do this is to buy a router. This will allow more than 1 computer to use a single internet connection.
Now if your cheap and like to switch cables then you'll need to cycle the power on the modem everytime you switch computers.
Modems remember mac addresses and must be reset when changing computers.

Do yourself a favor and buy a modem.

What do you think you will gain by doing a direct connect to the modem?

You loose a hardware FW, which is a big plus. You will need to install a real firewall, MS firewall doens't qualify as a true FW. Set as NOT to ALLOW Execptions. You want generate the trafic, not allow everything to pass through to your machine.

Is that alll I need to do is power it off and power it back on so it can cyle cuz I am getting an IP set and everything but it wont assign a default gateway for me so just turning it off and on will fix it? Thanks

Modems retain the mac address for 5 min or so depending on modem. Cycling the power is a quick fix.

is it a cable modem? and if it is has the computer ever been hooked up to it or always the router, you may need to register your MAC address with ur isp.

If you setup your service with a different pc, the router may have is't MAC Address cloned into it. If the is the case you will need to contact your ISP like youdidwhat said.
