Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about OCing my first system. It's about 3 years old and it's starting to show its age. I've read some guides on the site about OCing. I'd like to know, given my setup, mobo, memory, can I easily clock to 3.00 Ghz from an E6600 @2.4 Ghz? Could I do this without getting a new heat sink and sticking with the stock one?

Mainboard : Gigabyte 965P-DS3
Chipset : Intel P965
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2400 MHz
Physical Memory : Corsair XMS2 DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399 MHz) with timings 5-5-5-18@400 Mhz, I believe. 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card: Nvidia Corp GeForce 7900 GT (256 MB), the one made by EVGA
Hard Disk : Seagate 300GB Internal Sata 7200 RPM 16MB 3.5IN 3GB/S
DVD-RomDrive : HP DVD Writer 740b SCSICdRom Device
Monitor Type : Samsung SyncMaster - 19 inchs, 931 BF
Network Card: Marvell Semiconductor (Was: Galileo Technology Ltd) Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit EthernetController (Copper)
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Professionnal 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3
DirectX : Version 9.0c (July 2007)
PSU: 550 W Athena

Try it and find out. Your biggest obstacle will be your MB, as it apparently does not support FSB speeds faster than 1066MHz. You will need to boost the FSB to overclock your CPU. You won't need a new CPU cooler unless the current one won't cool your CPU properly under load (e.g. using some PRIME95-based stress-testing program).

A more modern MB that supported 1333MHz (and faster) FSB speeds would be VERY likely to allow you an easy OC to 3GHz.

I see. I'm still new at this but does this mean that it won't be possible at all (as in no chance) of OC to 3.00 Ghz with my current motherboard? I'm running RealTemp and SpeedFan to measure my normal core temp and it says that it is around 58 C, isn't that high, under a torture stress test, it went into the high 70s, not sure if it should be going that high. I haven't done any OC on anything yet.

My mobo only supports 1066, but people run it between 1200-1300.
