I have a friend who has a brand new r9 280x that we bought but never used and so he would sell it to me for $200. Around that price is the gtx 950 which came out earlier this year. While the 280x came out in 2013. Would it be better to buy a less-powerful but much newer GPU? I have seen people comparing the 280x with the 960 which is around $100 cheaper. So do newer GPU eventually beat older ones and would it be better to buy a newer one? I am looking to only upgrade maybe one every two years so I want one that can last me the longest.

280x is going to last longer definitely. I sense a nvidia fanboy but the 280x is much better that the 960 in nearly all games. It even eats the 960 on Witcher 3 and that's a nvidia game.

So get the r9 285 and it has dx12 support

Looks like the R9 280X and GTX 960 trade blows with eachother. In some games the R9 280X is faster, in others the 960 is faster. However, the 960 has a distinct advantage over the 280X in that it's newer and will be supported for longer than the last generation 280X. The GTX 950 has the same advantage as the 960, but with slightly lower performance and price. It's up to you to decide what you think will get you the most bang for your buck.

GTX 960 is your best bet if you can afford it.

I don't think I'm the fanboy here.

The 960 and the 280X trade blows with eachother. Neither is significantly faster than the other. Additionally, GTX 900 series cards are going to receive better driver support than R9 200 series cards and for longer because the 900 series is significantly newer. Between the 960 and 280X, the 960 is the best option because it's a current generation card and the 280X is not. Between the GTX 950 and the 280X, the 280X is hands down the better performer, but the 950 is going to have better support and for longer because, again, it's a current generation card.

Im not going to get into the driver argument. Buy i will say the 280x is a GCN instruction set card they are not dissimilar to the AMD 300 series cards and i think they currently use the same exact drivers. So basically as long as the AMD 300 series cards get driver support by proxy the 200 series cards will as well. And the 280x takes the 960 by a little bit in almost every game I can think of, check it out: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-960,4038-4.html

Ok, here is my real experience when using EVGA GTX 950 SSC 2GB DDR5 vs Asus R9 280X DirectCU II Top 3GB DDR5

Using latest drivers download from EVGA and ASUS website, DirectX12

At most of game, 950 beat 280X, and more stable FPS (Dota 2, Warframe, Tera, COD,....)

Because i change from gtx 950 to 280X crossfire with 7970. Really bad choice from me. Crossfire unstable with latest driver, fps drop for no reasons.

Rightnow, i am back to GTX 950 and selling 280X and 7970. Fuck AMD, never comeback again. I even change my PSU from 650W to 850W for that crossfire.

PS: another thing is, i OC my 280X around 10%, but still, same shit when compare to 950 SSC
