Hey guys, im thinking of getting and R9 285. But im not sure my my CPU is good enough. I have AMD Phenom II X4 850 @ 3.3.

If the bottleneck will happen, whats the best in slot CPU i can get to stop it? Heres my motherboard - Crosshair IV Formula (AM3). I assume this doesn't support AM3+ CPUs?

Thanks for your help :)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you are right, it doesn't support AM3+ cpu's so FX are off the table.

On a higher note, Your phenom will run the r9 285, Bottle-necking is an over used term these days so I'll pretty much get to what you need to know.
Will it run the r9 285 well? Yes. Are there CPU's that can do a better job running with it? Yes.

But that can be said about any cpu that happens to be...

But that can be said about any cpu that happens to be stronger than the one in question at the time. There's always a CPU out there that will run with the graphics card better than the previous one, if there isn't at that point in time.. There will be one that will be released that will be.

Bottlenecking only really occurs when the CPU is ridiculously weak that it drags the GPU down to underwhelming levels of performance. It's mostly trial and error but I can personally vouch that your Phenom will be fine with it. From experience with this kind of setup.

I'm not sure if it needs an OC for that card.. Guess it couldn't hurt to give it a boost I suppose.
