Hello , I found a refurbished Asus DirectCU II R9 290X 4gb for 300 euros ( A new Asus Strix R9 380X is 310 euros while an R9 390 is 380 euros ) , so my question is , would a Seasnoic S12II 520 W be enough to hold a R9 290X and an intel CPU (I5 most likely) ? Or should I go for a better one ?

Solution

Oh yeah , excuse me , I am stupid . Hmm , considering the fact the i7 draws more than twice as much power as the i5 does , I think the 520W will be enough for the R9 290X , but I will make a choice once I get the GPU , thank you all for the answers.

actaully, i think your pupouse was not to get a new psu but to get a new grafiscard.....

if you went with a nvidia 970 it would cost the same, use 50 watts less and outperporm the 290/*keep up with the 380/390 so instead of speading money on a PSU that you technicly dont need but is rather just recomented you should get a 970 that really does only require a 500watt PSU and you could relax and save a dime.

Yeah , but the 970 is the same price as a 390 , which is kind of expensive , as the almost 100 euros difference is a lot in my country... if I can find a 970 for cheaper than the 290X , I will get it ...

I need a new PSU regardless , I am running an I3 3220 and HD 7750 on an AC Bel 350W ... this crap PSU won't be able to hold a GTX 970, it will blow up...

I am planning to buy a new PSU this/next month. So yeah , I will most likely go for the Seasnoic S12II 620W , if not the 520W one...

I will get an i5 , I know the i3 will bottleneck them for sure , and yes , if I can't find a better PSU , I will most likely go for the 380X , thank you all for your answers , have a great night.

The GTX 780 consumes just as much as the R9 290X right?
Edit : Nvm , googled it , its TDP is 50W lower than the R9 290X's. It could still be okay on the S12II 520W... Wouldn't want to risk it though.

Okay , I read your edit , hmm , well , he that's a R9 290 , not a 290X , doesn't the 290X have a significantly higher TDP?

I am still a little bit scared that the PSU won't be able to hold it ...

it is not only that the i7 draws more power it is also that it is an older extreme edition version, in addition with a top of the line MOBO and dominator RAM, running older drivers, since the test was done the only thing that has happen is improvements on the chip (reversions) and better drivers with power consumption in mind. in addition to that in romania with the limited choices you do have in the parts you buy the seasonic 520 is pretty ,cream of the crop/top of the line/ choosing something different does not mean that it is necessarily an improvement if you find a corair 600 that does not mean it is better than the seasonic 520, mainly due to the manufacturing process and the choice of parts used. seasonic and other manufactures such as antec; and the nova line; have set new levels of competitiveness roswell is actually making decent 1000w PSU with good components now that there is a demand for them with SLI and all that.but for a regualr person the PSU given the CPU are getting smaller on a nano scale using less energy and and so will gpu's buy a 1000watt PSU and making it cost and arm and a leg ( or as much as a the GPU its self) is not the way to go when e.g. 500watts of quality wil do you just fine and you are not even near cutting it close when you have 106watts to spare or better yet said 20% that is 20 percent of extra power you would wast and porlly end up throwing away had you listened to those guys above it is also prolly about 40euros you saved (90euros if you count the full price of a new 650 PSU) which would just be a waste "safe" or not still a waste case you would then have 37%percent watts just sitting there costing you money out the plug. and then what you gaonna get the GPU next month cause just spent all your money on the psu which does you no good what so ever, no performance boost, no cooling, lights, and sure extra power but nothing that will do you any good with out a graficscard or 2.
so my two cents.

na i i7E, 290x requires max, full load, 414 watt, his seasnic will handle that well seeing as he has 106 watts to spare and the seasonic will not dip or drop off till it has reached is 520watts
unlike other PSU not so well made such as the older corair where they will dip and destabilize well before max watt wattage, which leads to instable PC's. besides hes only useing and i5 and not and i7e.

Well , I will go for the Seasnoic S12II 520W and R9 290X combo then , as from what you said above , it seems like it will have no problem . Thank you all for answering . If I decide to get a R9 390 , the PSU will still have no problem right ? As the R9 390 has a lower TDP ?
