I bet everyone was in the position to make this decision :)

My previous Graphics card is going back to the manufacturer for a warranty repair, I have lying around my old GeForce256DDR (32MB) and a more recent Radeon7000 (32MB).

I would suspect due to age the Radeon7000 more capable however, given the price difference (£25 to £180 when new) I have some doubts in my mind.

I'm not expecting to play anything modern with these cards but I would like to play Quake III and C&C Generals, which would be best. I would install them both and test but the old NVidia drivers are nasty and I'd rather not install unless it is the better card.

Between the two, Geforce256DDR.

That being said, Q3 should be alright, but if your going to try to tackle C&C with that card, you better be willing to accept running below 800x600 with details, textures, models and environments low (low low)

The game requires a minimum of a 32mb GPU, so expect your frame rate to dip quite low.

EDIT: Also realize those GPU's are DirectX 7....=(

I think ATI introduced t&l with the 7500 which was designed as the actual counter to the sucess of the G256, But nvidia released the G2 and jumped all over it like a toddler ina flower garden.

At least you're in a better position that I was when I had problems like this..(I had to live with an old old S3 Savage4 8mb)

Well I've had experience with the Radeon 7000 64mb DDR, its a weak card.. even on dx7 level, and I do believe it is one of the first dx7 cards on the shelf.

Geforce256 IMO would be the better pick, since the R7000 doesn't have hardware T&L

The original Radeon 32MB DDR and 64MB DDR (pre 7000) had Hardware T&L. These later became the Radeon 7200's. But the VE and 7000 came after and didn't have it. I had a a couple 7000's and remember not being able to run 3dmark2001 on them even.

Why did you reply to a three-year-old thread?
Umm, Because it was started today and even though the cards are ancient, when you get old it's fun remines about the good old days. I still use a pre radeon daily in this rig; it's an AIW 128 pro 32MB AGP. *woot*

i have a geforce 256 ddr agp. i also have a radeon 7500 pci. the geforce ddr easily plays quake III at highest settings, id use the geforce, also the geforce supports fast writes im not sure if the radeon does or not (the agp version).

Thanks for your input, the GeForce 256 it is, minimum settings were expected for C&C but it does play the game so it will do. Tried Doom 3, it's a bit flickery but does run :)

It is one of my favourite cards ever - ran everything I had at the time with no problem, just a bit sad to see how it has aged.
