Radeon HD 5850 not good enough?

I just got a new monitor so I can play games on one screen and stream, or watch movies on the other. The game is World of Warcraft.

I'm very disappointed though. I've been trying to run the game on one screen and when I start video on the other screen, the game slows down from 60 FPS to 50 and sometimes 40.

I tried to set the settings down, but its not really helping.

If there's nothing I can do, then what about adding another card into my computer? I seem to remember though when I was building the system that there didn't seem to really be much room after I put in the first HD 5850.

I thought this card would be good enough to run WoW and play a simple video at the same time. 🙁

What is your resolution? What PSU do you have? What card, a 5830, 5850, or 5870?

The resolution is 1920 x 1080

The card is a 5850

The CPU is a core i7 920. Everything runs fine, the game runs fine usually, but simply trying to run a youtube video and WoW at the same time slows it down to about 40 fps. Closing youtube immediately brings it back to 60 FPS.

It just seems like playing a youtube video shouldn't slow it down that much. Even running a video file from my hard drive has the same effect.

Anything I can do about it?

That is quite odd. 60fps should be about normal, but a youtube vid should not lower it down to 40fps. Did you download all the latest drivers from ATI?

Why not? Might want to listen to some clip that is easiest to find on youtube and even that will slow the game down. The main thing I wanted it for was to watch movies while playing the game, and now it's not going to work because of the slow down 🙁

And yeah, the drivers are up to date.

40fps is not bad, but if it bugs you that much then pop another one in your machine. I do not know why it drops so much. 🙁 Do a few more tests.

When OP tries to play youtube video and woh at the same time catalyst gets confused becoz woh is 3d and youtube is 2d.So powerplay may downclock the clock while playing woh and youtube at the same time.

If your trying to play HD video on the other screen that is asking alot of a graphics card,that doesn't sound right tho a 5850 is a massive card and should be able to handle that,trying watching a video that isn't in HD or try lower the monitor resoultion down from 1920x1080,just 1 notch and see if you get a improvement.

I think it's just to much of a load for it to handle,adding another 5850 should fix it,and you can only add another ard from the 58xx sieres in order for crossfire to work.Just make sure it can fit.

First, your welcome. Second, to install another card just make sure you have another PCI-E 16 slot and 2 more 6-pin connectors. 😀

That's it? I should get a card in the 5800 range though, right?

Well, I haven't kept up with cards since I looked at them last year, what would you guys recommend now? Another 5850 or is there a better one now for the price?

in order to crossfire with your current 5850 it is to be in the same series,meaning a 5830,5850 or 5870.Make sure that you have a crossfire compatable mobo with 2 PCI express slots, and enough power to run all of it.

I agree with dipankar's assertion. I've had similar behavior running UtraVNC at the same time as MassEffect 2. GPU clocks decided to run at clocks set for desktop. I bet Mr. Baller's problem is the card running at video settings and not 3D settings.

I wonder if flashing the BIOS to set the video speeds to be the same as the 3D settings would work....or maybe that can be done in the default CCC profile....

Well i cant see why a HD5850 cant do it if my puny old x1600pro can... i can run a 720p youtube vid on one of my 1920x1080 monitors and something that FOR its day was a killer for my card Doom3 @ 1440x900

I would have to agree with the power play option... i would try a LIGHT and i mean LIGHT OC of the card through ether overdrive or ATI tool or ATI Tray tools and see if manually setting the clock rates and locking them helps means you dont have to play with bios flashing

I think if you edit the file \users\<username>\appdata\local\ati\ace\profiles.xml" you can change the core speed for the 3 clock levels, i.e. destop, video, and 3d.

Here is the section of the file I would edit:

The values in bold are the clock settings with 2 extra zeros. So you can see that at desktop you will run at 400 MHZ, at video you'll run 550 MHZ, and in 3D you'll run 850 MHZ. I would just change 55000 to 85000 and see if that works.

*note: adjust the memory setting as well if it isn't 1000. My system might not be identical to yours.

40fps is not bad at all. You don't need an upgrade. Really what percentage of the time are you watching movies and playing?
