RAM MISFIT

I recently fitted a stick of DDR RAM the wrong way round and the RAM toasted itself. The board has no visual signs of damage but I think the CPU may have been overheated when this happened - when attempting to restart, the beeps given are for overheating of CPU. I have sent the CPU off for checking.

A second stick of RAM that was in the next slot is OK.

My question is: (a) is it likely that the CPU has been damaged by this RAM problem? ...and (b) if I fit a new CPU in the board is there a chance that it will get damaged on start-up?

I'm hoping I can still use the board but I am feeling very cautious about the risk of it wrecking any new parts I may fit to it.

Thanks for any help given.

When I have seen this done, the ram ended up OK, but the dimm slots were dorked.

In other words, check carefully, the ram may be OK (put in another mobo and use memtest86 to test it), while I bet your mobo will need to be replaced.

Have not seen this mess up a CPU.

HOW THE HELL CAN YOU PUT A RAM IN THE WRONG WAY ROUND?! It has a notch to stop exactly that.

Anyway, you win this weeks stupid contest

Well actually Ned the stupid thing was thinking the RAM would only fit one way round - the RAM went in without undue force and the end clips were up!

It was a stupid mistake and a costly one, but at least now I'm a little wiser and not so stupid to think RAM only fits in one way round.

By the way, thank you to those members who made civil and constructive replies.

>>RAM does only fit one way round. That's why I can't understand how you messed up.<<

I wish you were right there - that's what I thought.

>>He took a dremel and removed the notch in the middle of the DIMM slots.<<

Now if the notch was "in the middle" there would be no point!

As it happened, I as in a hurry and just put the RAM in with the machine on the floor and as it went in and the end clips came up, I thought all was OK. The location notch, which is staggered, is 2 or 3 millimetres below the top of the RAM slot, so the module went in part way, the end clips also came up. The irony is, had I thought the module could be fitted the wrong way round, I would have got the machine on the bench and been a lot more careful. Still, something I will never get caught on again.

The actual RAM slot is not damaged, so I'm still hoping the board is still usable. I'm waiting for the CPU to be checked and returned and I'm hoping it's survived. The CPU looked fine with no visual signs of overheating, however, I did get continuous high pitched beeps which according to the manual is CPU overheat. I'm thinking (hoping) the BIOS settings got scambled and maybe that could account for the CPU beep response.
