Hey,

My computer is shutting down randomly; sometimes upon startup and sometimes thirty minutes after logging in. I cannot open it in safe mode, it seems to just piss off that I would even try that. It also, is more likely to shut down early if I restart it right after it just shut down. I am almost certain I do not have any viruses; that was what I first thought and begin looking into new hard drives, yet now, after running several scans, I do not believe I have any on my computer.

I checked my power supply to see if any of the cords were burnt, but they are all fine, so I do not believe that is it.
I checked my RAM by taking one out and leaving the other in, then swapping, but it still shut down both times, so it must not be that.

It is my belief that it is either my motherboard, or processor. I am leaning towards motherboard, because that seems more common with this type of error.

If anyone has any other insights into what could be happening, or how to check if it is my mobo or processor, please let me know. Otherwise, I will order a new mobo on friday.

I currently have a gigabyte motherboard that is only a year old, I am not sure of more specific details but if they would help i could acquire them. Though it does seem strange to me that it already failed....however, because it shuts down ranDUMBly and not just during times when I am doing a lot of things, I believe it is the mobo over processor.

Thank you for your time and any input you have.

oh, and also does anyone recommend any motherboards they really like. I am looking at spending under 200, but really do not care too much if it is over....that is if you guys think it is worth it.

Thanks,
Ryan

Well, I agree, check to see if your board is under warranty.

As to checking the power supply... burnt wires would be the least likely way your PSU would fail. A poor quality PSU, or one that is failing, will deliver power that fluctuates. You need some pretty sophisticated equipment to detect this.

But by all means try the MB first.

That's why I always recommend very high quality PSUs... you want to make it as unlikely as possible that it would fail, because 80% of the time figuring out if it IS failing is a nightmare.

The machine won't start in Safe mode? At the very least, whatever its cause, you now have got a corrupt Windows installation.
Is heat involved? Take the side of your case off and aim a common fan into your PC. Any change?
What is your brand and model of PSU, and how old is it? Capacitor aging could be having an effect on its ability to power your system.

When I try to start in Safe Mode, and it goes to some weird page and begins loading before shutting off....once or twice it would go into safe mode, but only "safe mode with networking"

This is what I ordered one year ago, and it worked perfect till about two weeks ago:
