Real Temp Question

I recently posted a question about what are safe temps for Core i-7 940 2.93ghz. I posted that I had overclocked to 3.42ghz with no voltage change. I then downloaded realtemp 3.00 and ran Prime 95 for 1 hour. The highest temps in real temp read: 52 52 49 50. I understand that aspect, but what the hell is "distance to TJ Max"?????? I also noticed that my Asus Probe stated the cpu temp was 58c under full load and realtemp stated my cpu was at 52C under fulload. I take it to trust realtemp instead fo the Asus probe software?

Thanks...here are my comp psecs:

Thermaltake Spedo Advance Tower
Asus PT6 Mobo
Intel Core i-7 940 OC'd @ 3.4ghz
V8 Cooler Master CPU Cooler
6GB Kingston HyperX Memory
2 X 500GB Seagate Barracuda's in Raid 0
Sapphire Radeon 4870 X2 2GB Oc'd 785/975
1200W Thermaltake PSU
SB Xtreme Gamer X-FI Sound Card
Creative SB 7.1 Surround Speaker System

Your nerdy guide n the 1st thread didnt answer my question above. The techpower up link was not provided the first time to me. You could be more helpful not giving attitude over the thread. But then again reading your guide its apparent you have no social life. I guess a typical response from the typical anti-social geek.

PS Be respectfull to people..life is too short

First we must look at the scope of his guide.
Apparently you are neither and yet you blame him because his guide is too complicated for you to understand? An alternative would be to post same, and he would be back here holding your hand.

Toward the bottom of his guide he linked the HOWTO: Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals) - Guide v1.6.1. In this guide you will find the following:
Clearly, the information in question regarding the DTS and distance to tjmax was accessible from his guide. The specific data relating to the Intel "released" Tjmax numbers is a little dated, but it's well covered in Comps guide so that's not really a problem. The passage is there to give an understanding of the process.

I was going to just Google it for you, but that would be too easy.

It is and it isn't. Intel has given us some numbers and said Tj Max could be higher by X amount (literally just X) for any core but that's about it. Nothing concrete, just something to chew on.

Well Intel did give some guidance on the chips, not concrete guidance but close. There was a question about the Q6600 being 95c or 100C. Core Temp had it at 100C and Real Temp had it at 95C. Based on the last round with Intel, everyone agrees it's 100C. (actually closer to 97C 😉 ). The numbers he is throwing around appear to be a little dated, but again it's not a temp guide, that's why we have Comps.

I have a much the same setup, exept for a few things: I have a core i7 920 in an asus p6t mobo, but I have a TRUE to cool it with the push/pull configuration. I use speed fan and the pc probe II that comes with the modo. I get ~25C on idle and ~45C on load for both proggies loading it up with prime 95. I'm sure if I overclocked it to 3.4ghz it would get the same temps as you, so I would download speed fan, and which ever proggie it's closest to, go with that one. Also what is your bois temps? Mine are about 5C to hot so you can also see which proggie is ~5C away from that.
