Removing a fan

How do I remove a fan from my Athlon 800 T-bird without damaging anything? The fan was secured by a patch of paste which melts and forms a seal when the CPU heats up for the first time.

#1 Run your computer at 100% load for a while so it gets nice and toasty warm.
#2 Shut it down and unplug it
#3 Remove the fan while the cpu is still hot (so the thermal paste is soft)
