i have a question which is rather silly, but would temperatures drop if i took the shroud off gtx 580?? what if i added another exhaust fan on top of back of the card to dispense the heat even more?? however i read somewhere that if u do take the shroud off it would make the card hotter since there is no airflow from card's fan blowing through the heatsink and out the back. some guy did testing on it and temps. did really get higher.
but i was just wandering if i did take the shroud off AND add exhaust fan on top OR possibly even add blowing fan,if temps would be cooler. anyone any opinions?
ps:i have poor case ventilation, only one exhaust fan in the back.

Solution
what is your case? and is your card a reference (blow out the back) design? if you have mesh oh the side panel for a fan adding on will pull air in and the gpu fan should still grab it. Without one and it not lining up with the GPU its fan wont be able to suck much in on its own. you REALLY need some intakes. Usually there's one or a space for one in the bottom front panel
I have tried a few configs.
Removing the shroud did not work for me, but it has worked for others who added a few more fans. I tried drilling holes in the shroud and making a duct with a fan on it from a 2 liter bottle. It worked well until I added hard drives that made the fan suck hot air. I am currently using a simple 80mm fan screwed onto the shroud over the card fan, it works pretty good.

Try putting a fan in front of the HD blowing in and one in back blowing out.
That usually works well.
Someone told me about the GELID Icy Vision.

It looks cool to me ;-)
and the price is right.

Well I ordered pci slot case cooler ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835888309 )and its an exhaust fan. I wanted to see if anyone has tried to take off shroud and place exhaust fan above the heatsink to suck in hot air from it and blow it out of case.
The problem is i cannot place fan in front of 580 since i have no room there.not even above the card's fan.only place i have left is at the top of the card at the back or below the card in the front (below card's fan). plus i have no intake fan in the case, only fan that blows air out of case.So im trying to cool it down anyway i can without buying fancy vga coolers, otherwise i'd just buy liquid cooling. yes i realize my case sucks but it is what it is lol

but anyways thnx for reply and the gelid icy vision fans do look cool but im trying no to take apart the card completely for new fans.just add fans somwhere in the case i guess.

btw,i have mesh next to the 580's heatsink at the back of the card.do u think if i removed shorud and add fan on the side of the case by that mesh, would my temp drop since the fan is blowing cold air onto the heatsink?

Solution

well thats the thing,I have HP case from stock computer which only has one exhaust fan in the back on the bottom and that's it. And yea my cards is gtx580 so yea it does blow hot air out at the back, but since my case is so packed inside i actually added two fans where the mesh is.one at the back of the card and on in is in front of the card like 2 inches away. there's no way there's can add fron intake fan since there's no hole or anything cuz its completely enclosed.only if I modified the case myself, which would void my 3 year warranty.so I'm just trying to add fans or try to take the shroud off and add another exhaust fan on top to help to take out hot air out off the graphics card.so yea

Modding the case would be my choice but the warranty is a booger. I always thought HPs were only one year? oh well. you.could leave the side panel off. or... replace it with a piece of plastic or sheet metal you can mod and put fans on... maybe LOL. it would look odd, just a though

actually my side panel has two mesh holes right next to graphics card.i added two fans there and it dropped a temperature a little.my main concern was how loud it got cuz i can keep the card cool by changing RPMs of fan but it gets loud (over 70%).so now my temp stays the same but its quiter since i changed fans setting to lower RPMs than before.so it kinda works lol.and i read 80-85C on gtx580 is completely fine.max is 97% and if it hits that temp.card with underclock itself
