Repair reinstall is it possible?

I seem to recall that XP allows for you to do a repair install. I tried
this only to get the message that it could not be done since the version I
had already installed was newer than my CD's. I assume that this is because
I have SP2 installed. How does one get a repair install done, or do you
have to request a replacement CD or somehow try to make a copy of your
original CD & incorporated SP2 into it?

Yes, your problem is due to the fact that you upgraded your system with SP2.
You can do a full restore installation, but that will wipe out your data.
Or you can do what is called a slipstreaming of your original CD and the SP2
files.

www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp gives clear and
detailed instructions on how to make a slipstreamed CD from your original
Windows CD and either the SP2 download or MS CD.

If you perform a repair install, your installation media (CD) needs to
really be the same service pack level as your currently installed system.
You will likely need to create a new CD from the old one with SP2
slipstreamed/integrated into it. Something like "AutoStreamer" would assist
you in making this new CD from the old one.
