Didn't know how to properly title this, but anyway. The replacement batteries for this specific computer/series of computers is worth more than the laptop itself. I have one laying around that used to be the family computer; really, I just want to get it running again to mess with it and sift through the old files. I still have a battery for it; however, I'm weary of just getting a new power cord (don't currently have one) and plugging it in because the main issue this laptop had was overheating. It would get so hot from the battery being bad that it nearly burned your legs, and you usually had to sit with a blanket if you didn;t have it on the table (seriously.) It would cause it to shut down sometimes, especially with strenuous processes (games, lots of open browsers tabs, etc) and I really don't want to run it like that. I guess my question is, is there any way at all to run it strictly off of the power supply? Battery removed, not having to run power through it? I'm pretty sure that's a shot in the dark and wishful thinking to avoid a 60 dollar (or more) battery, but hey, I figured it was worth a shot to get some opinions.

For laptop's of that era, you needed the battery in the laptop to power. Some laptops didn't need them and they weren't built by Compaq.

Your history of posts seems to show you repair laptops, if so, reviving dead/dying laptops with concurrent workloads is a bad idea and the resources spent would be best allocated to a lower TDP laptop/notebook.
