Help me decide between the gimped RTX 3050 6GB or gimped RX 580 (2048). I can't find any "vs" videos online of those two cards. It seems the gimped 580 is basically a RX 570 8GB, so would that be a fair comparison?

Hello.
Please be careful.
RX570 or RX580 new can be bought only from chinese manufacturers.
Don't do that unless you want to have problems all day long.
Many of them are refurbished cards from mining era.
So unless you want to have a lot of trouble, i would suggest as @davidacellphone to try to buy at least a 3060 or from AMD you can try at least a Radeon 6600 with 8GB. That can be found on Amazon at 200 USD and a Radeon 6600 XT can be found at 220 USD.

In addition, there are a lot of Chinese video cards that are made with mobile versions of popular GPU's. In many cases, they do not perform the same, as they are optimized for power efficiency and low temps for use in laptops and AIO's.

In any case, it doesn't make sense to buy an RX 580 in 2024, as Polaris and Vega are on the verge of losing official driver support. They've already been spun off onto their own support cycle, separate from RDNA, so it's only a matter of time before they are dropped entirely.

OK. Thank you all. I'll drop the idea of those two cards. I had my eye on a used GTX 1070 and won the bid for it at $100. That was near my budget limit. Faster than either of my original choices, yes? BTW artk2219, I'm in the US.
Still looking for patrikrk13's $200-ish GTX 3070, tho.
The 3050 is a tad faster than the 1070. But, it also has DLSS among other benefits. IMO, the 1070 is a bad buy. But, if you're happy with it and it gives you what you want, it doesn't matter a dot what I think :)

I'm glad to hear you were able to pickup a card, I was going to mention the RX Vega 56 and 64 as well since you can find those near 100 as well. The Vega 56 sits between a GTX 1070 and 1080 in performance, roughly level with an RTX 3050, and the Vega 64 sits between a GTX 1080 and 1080 super, slightly above a full RTX 3050 in performance. The issue is that both the GTX 1000 series and RX Vega series are currently in limited driver support due to their age. So in another couple of years you will be having to upgrade again anyway since new games wont be supported as well.

Ebay RX Vega listings
