Question RTX 3080 vs RTX 4090 performance difference

Ryzen 5800X (8-core CPU)
32GB DDR4 3600Mhz RAM
1050W Platinum-rated Thermaltake PSU
I’m running a similar setup with a 3080, 5800X3D and 2x16gb 3200mhz (oc’d to 3600). I use this with a 1440p 240Hz monitor and occasionally a 4K 120Hz TV.

At 1440p I would expect good gains when using Ray Tracing although I find RT fairly pointless. Without RT there might be some gain in gpu heavy games when running max settings but I’d expect in most games little to no benefit as the max fps is set by the cpu/RAM and a 3080 can run at or close to max settings while achieving that limit anyway.

At 4K you would need a high Hz display to benefit but I would expect in a lot of modern AAA games a decent improvement with either RT on or off. However there are games that the 3080 has no problem pushing 100+ fps even at max settings so this will be game dependent.

If you run a resolution and Hz under 1440p 144Hz you probably are not utilising the 3080 to it’s full potential so there would be no point in a gpu upgrade.

Edit: I like to upgrade for aesthetics or noticeable performance improvement which usually means gains over 30%. At the moment I am not getting the urge to upgrade to a 4080/4090, I just don’t think the games I play will benefit. If I find newer games feeling like I am compromising settings too much to get the fps I want then I would change my mind.

Is my CPU/RAM/PSU enough for an RTX 4090?

Is PCIe 4.0 x16 slot enough bandwidth for an RTX 4090?
