The benchmark is kind of pointless... Doubt anyone will buy 4090 just to play overwatch.

However if it's really 2x performance of 3080, it's likely 50% faster than 3090ti.

Not bad but not quite enough. At 4k, even 3090ti only manages 30-40fps with raytracing... So, 4090 can only increase it to 45-60fps... Rather poor.

Now this value proposition is without DLSS 3. If you know how R&D works, a significant amount of that is toward software and hardware to enable new feature. A full picture should include what DLSS 3 brings to the table and if it worths all that extra silicon.

Anyone else looking at these new cards and feel there is little point in upgrading with current games? At 1440p 240Hz my 3080 is going a cracking job still, to the point I doubt I’d notice any benefit from an upgrade. It feels like gpu performance has accelerated faster than game requirements?

That's because your on the wrong monitor, 4k, or even triple monitor, high end VR.. all push current cards to the max

If the same % holds true it would be 60% faster than a 3090ti, but your also forgetting they made significant gains in both ray tracing and dlss which means your peak performance is likely to be a 100% increase over a 3090ti with RT and dlss on both.

I do occasionally hook the system up to my 4K 120Hz TV, still don’t feel any need to upgrade. Historically I have had the upgrade itch by the time a new generation comes around but this time for me I don’t see the point with current games. I was curious if others felt the same. Fair enough if others do feel the need.

If you have to be running a 4K high Hz, triple monitor or VR headset to see a point of running a 4080 16gb then doesn’t that support my thinking though? That’s a fairly small user base using those, are the top end cards now too powerful to really be beneficial to more mainstream situations?

Except in VR. I have a 3090 and a pimax 8kx (dual 4k screens), and run it at 66% supersampling in some games in order to hit the 90 fps target. Ideally, I'd like to be around 200% which is out or reach. Pimax has announced development of a hmd with dual 6k screens. We'll need twice the power of the 4090 to drive that.

Benchmarking a 4090 on Overwatch is like using a Bugatti to go grocery shopping... Overwatch 2 is more or less using the same engine that released in 2016. It was very well optimized and would basically run on a toaster even back then. If Nvidia wants to showcase next gen power, pick a game that can actually benefit from it.

The top cards have always been at the cutting edge of game tech, that's kind of the point of them. As far as mainstream, consider this.. games like RDR2, star citizen, cyberpunk and the new microsoft flight simulator kick even a 3090s butt on a 1440p monitor.
If you have a 3xxx series now, unless you have plenty of excess money it's generally not worth the upgrade.
