I asked the same question a few weeks ago when I was upgrading from an Ati 2400 pro to HIS 5670. I have a 300 PSU and I asked whether it could handle the ATI 5670. I got mixed answers, some said yes and others advised for a PSU upgrade. The HIS 5670 consumes 64 Watt max under load and so I kind of knew my 300 watt will be fine. Indeed, everything turned out fine!!!

Now the new problem:

I want to now upgrade to the ATI 5750 (by MSI). Actually, I have already ordered this GPU from newegg.ca. The 5750 consumes 86 watt max. So, it only consumes about 22 more watts than my ATI 5670.

So, will my 300 watt PSU be able to run the ATI 5750 (86 watt max) fine? (considering it ran the ATI 5670 more than fine (64 watt max))

FYI: I will buy the PCI Express power adapter that converts two 4-pin Molex power supply connectors into a single 6-pin PCI Express connector to power the ATI 5750.

These are my specs:

Dell Inspiron 530
Intel Core 2 duo e4600 @ 2.4GHz
3 GB ram @ 800Mhz
300 watt PSU

If you do suggest me a new PSU, please suggest me one considering the size of my case. It is a Dell Inspiron 530 and it doesn't look that big. I dont know what kind of PSU to look for, for compatibility reasons.

^+1, if your PSU doesn't have a 6-pin PCI-e connector, you can use a dual molex to 6-pin PCI-e connector. At legitreviews, a Core i7 system o/c to 3.5GHz with an HD 5750 only consumed 245W under load, so you're definitely safe.

Thank you guys for your opinions.

Looks like everyone says I should be fine, with the exception of a few at Yahoo answers. (People at yahoo answers don't know what they are talking about anyways :) ).

I am gonna give it a try, once I receive the video card.

CHeers!

I finally had the chance to test out the MSI 5750 on a Dell 300 watt psu.

Although I had to use many adapters to get it working, the gpu is working flawlessly!!

FYI, I had to use 2 adapters that converted SATA to Molex. Then I used a Molex to 6 pin adapter to get the card powered up.

Thank you guys for your replies, and for future reference to those who might come across this thread and are wondering whether their dell 300 watt psu is sufficient for a Ati 5750 (85 - 100 watt) card. The answer is YES!

i'm asking myself. at the moment i'm using a 400watt psu. i'm running an amd phenom 9550 2.2ghz, 2x2gb ddr2 667mhz, asus ati 4850 single slot, tv-tunercard and an lg blueray reader... the system runs great.

But i wonder if i can upgrade my gpu to an 5770, 5850?

So, there seems to be some sort of a problem.

The MSI 5750 had default clocks at (core/mem) 700/1050. I managed to overclock using ATI Overdrive to 775/1150.

Although I have the option to max it out at 875/1430 (using the ATI CCC), any higher than my current configuration (775/1150), the computer will freeze during 3d game play or even when performing the 3dmark06 benchmark.

Could the problem be the 300 watt psu not letting me overclock further?

Is it true that the Ati 5750 card you bought is able to run on your 300 watt psu ?! In fact the PC I just bought has the same psu watt, and i am trying to upgrade my graphic card to Ati 5750... However, i not so sure why some sources say that 400w is required. In the end, i ended up buying a power supply instead of the card. To make thing worse, the power supply can't fit properly. So I would like to know, only if,whether you are able to play latest games like mass effect 2 or crysis when set to max settings?? Thanks a lot...

Will you help me?? Just want to know a few things ...

I just bought a HP PC weeks ago and it has a psu of only 300watts. Therefore from what was mentioned in this forum, my PC should be able to use a Sapphire HD5750 vapor-x right??

If so,
will i be able to run latest games like mass effect 2 with high setting??
why some sources quoted that at least ~400watts is required??
Is there anything I should take note since 300w is <400 something watts as stated in requirement??

My PC specs:
HP p6380d
I-5 650 3.2GHz
Ati HD 4350 512Mb
4Gb ram
Total output power 300watts

Thank

Thank you for the info:) Anyway I actually bought a 500w PSU just now, but it didn't seem to fit in at first try. Perhap I'll try it again tomorrow, and hopefully it can manage to squeeze into my PC. I simply cannot take risk by overloading my current PSU. As for the Ati 5750 card, guess I have to wait to buy it.. Just wishing that the price will drop in weeks time..

The advice given was specifically for the Dell PSU. They use quality power supplies that they rate differently than most.
For PSUs of similar wattage in non-Dell computers an HD5750 may or may not work. You wont know until you test it.
@OP: It does sound like the PSU can't handle the OC.

Thanks for the advice:) Btw, I actually ended up buying a 500w PSU instead of the graphic card I went to shop for just now. I'll try to squeeze the PSU into my PC tomorrow, coz I simply cannot afford to put my pc at risk.

Yeh, go for the ATI 5770. I am running the XFX 5770 on my Dell 300 watt psu just fine!

But, I still have to upgrade my cpu, it is seriously bottlenecking the performance. (I have C2D e4600 @ 2.4 GHz ;( ).

Really? I knew those PSUs could handle the HD5750 but I wasn't so sure about the HD5770. You are probably pushing it to the limit as is so when you upgrade the processor I'd probably try to stick with a 65w CPU like the one you have now. The e6500 would probably be a good choice and affordable.

Yep. I will stick with a 65 watt processor as the Dell MOBO can't really take any other processors.

As for the psu, i probably am pushing it to its limit, who knows. Regardless, the HD5770 works flawlessly. With the Catalyst 10.4, I get 75-95 fps in Resident Evil 5, @1680x1050 with everything max and 8x AA.

For the cpu upgrade, I am going to upgrade to the intel e6500 or e6600 in about a month.

The 5770 is really pushing a 300w, bere in mind that if the psu pops it will take somthing else with it, they normally do run flawlessly and then bang! you lost cpu/mobo maybe even the card.,,id upgrade psu before cpu HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Hey slick3,

glad to help you. I have been running the XFX 5770 on the same psu for almost 4 months and it hasn't let me down.

The fans in the Dell inspiron 530 tower get the heat out but they are very much audible during heavy gaming, such as bad company 2, MW2, stalker, etc.

If your 300 psu is from dell, then you are FINE!

Go buy the 5770 now, its worth the extra over the 5750.
