Hello, guys. Ive been using amd for a while, and Im kind of lost when it comes to nvidia technologies. Im planning to upgrade my RX 6600 XT to a 3070, but is it really worth it? most newer games seem to depend on Frame Generation, and the 3000 series doesnt support it

3070 is better from 6600xt

It's up to you. The 3070 is a slightly stronger card but the 8gb of vram can hold it back. Another card you might look at as well is the rx 6700xt and the 6750xt as they would have competed with the 3070 but still had the 12gb vram. Not that the 3070 was a bad card but that 8gb vram could limit you sooner or later.

You can find used 6800xt/7800xt
Also can check the rx 6800 non xt . I’ve got a 6800xt myself and from benchmarks it will pretty well run neck and neck with a 7800xt, which is a competitor to the nvidia rtx 4070.
Thanks for responding again! yes, Im aware that I have those options, the RX 6700 XT is even cheaper than the 3070. However, my question mainly focuses on the 3070 because of DLSS. Since the 3000 series doesnt support NVIDIA’s frame generation, I dont understand the point of this card and why it’s so popular right now. Why should I go for NVIDIA if Im going to end up using FSR and AMD’s frame generation instead? I mean i know there are some games that allow you to use DLSS+AMD frame gen, like Tsushima and Stalker2 i believe, but they are few, and there are no guarantees that every new game will let you do that.

Exactly. I guess because it’s nvidia. Back during covid those were higher end hot cards that folks were paying over msrp for I think. But now imo there isn’t much point to them. I mean they are still good but with the amount of vram they have and not being able to use nvidias latest features they will become less relevant over time.

Even though a card like the 6700xt is the same generation, I think I remember seeing a video when the 4060ti first came out that the 6750xt, which is essentially a slightly overclocked 6700xt, that the 6750xt was comparable to the newerto 4060ti.

Even though cards like the 6000 series are the same age as the 3070, I’d argue they are more relevant because you can still use the newer features on them. So I would argue they’ve aged better. What’s ironic is that amd in a way is rescuing the older nvidia cards.

Another reason I’m not a fan of nvidia, you sort of alluded to. Over the last few cycles nvidia has tended to lock their newer features to their latest cards. 5000 series is right around the corner but they’ve been able to charge a premium for the 4000 series so it will be interesting to see if they do that again.

In regards to your question, the 3070 at the time was supposed to have been a solid 1440p card and could get expensive. So I suppose especially if they can use and far and frame generation to extend it’s life, if they are able to get the cards at a bargain price as an upgrade to their current card, that would likely be the draw.

But in my opinion there are a lot of amd cards out that are decent and reasonably priced, and with the new arc b580 at $250 entering the market, considering you can get one for that with 12gb vram, then that seems like a good option as well.

buyeye2k Hello. What are the main games that you currently play, and at what resolution, frame rate, settings? (e.g. valorant @ 1440p ultra settings). What your upgrade budget and in which currency (or country)? What is your monitor's mfg. and model? I'm asking because I'd like to determine on my own your resolution / refresh rate / panel type. Which CPU is installed and what's your motherboard's mfg. and model? I ask this to know what frame rate you can achieve, regardless of your GPU model (CPU) and which features are supports (MB). What are your precise storage drives?

In direct answer to your question: Upgrading from a AMD RX 6600 XT to a RTX 3070 would be a poor upgrade because it only represent a 39% boost in FPS (https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6600-xt.c3774). The bare minimum upgrade that I see people on the internet doing is 60%, and I personally generally don't upgrade unless I can achieve a 80 - 100% boost in FPS

Question: Why are you upgrading? Are you upgrading from 1080p to 1440p? Are you trying to achieve higher FPS or graphics settings in a specific title? And if so, which one, and what jump are you looking for. Without knowing this, it's challenging to suggest what you should upgrade to. Just my two cents...
