I'm trying to choose a processor to go with a GeForce gtx 1060. Looking to stay as inexpensive as possible but yet play most games and not be totally outdated. (Currently upgrading from and fx4300). I'm interested in either the ryzen 3 1300x or the ryzen 5 1500x. Is there a huge difference? I Play games like pubg. I already have new RAM and a new motherboard lined up, just need processor advice.
Thanks.

Right now personally I'd be looking towards the i5 8400 at that price point, but not until they release the cheaper motherboards. If you don't have a few weeks to wait then the 1400/1500X would be a better buy than the 1300X. The i3 8100 also looks like a pretty compelling CPU if you don't need a ton of power. It'll almost certainly be faster than the OC'ed 1200/1300X out of the box.
Is not the R5-1600 only about $30 more than 1500x? Yes, the 1060 will be maxed anyway, but, doing a GPU upgrade later will not leave you feeling 'behind'. (Look carefully at the results of the $184 i5-8400 as well at the review at Anandtech; it might be a gaming budget dream CPU)

1500x is 4 core 8 thread. Honestly as someone started though, the 1600 isn't much more and b350 boards don't cost much. I have mine clocked at 3.7ghz on stock cooling, but I'm not really happy with my case so I may change that out and get maybe like a hyper 212 Evo.

The problem I have with the lower i5 is that it's still a locked cpu. AMD already seems to have ryzen 2 on the roadmap for next year. If that happens, ryzen gets a lot more interesting.

You have to watch out on the cheap B350 boards if you change out the stock downdraft heatsink. You might be cooling the CPU better, but you're not going to get as much airflow over the VRMs and the VRM heatsinks aren't that big. Would suggest adding a second cheap/spare fan placed really low on the heatsink if you get a hyper 212.

When you say a few weeks, do you mean 1-2 weeks or 6-12 weeks?

If this is true....ouch!

According to that, there may not be a cheaper board coming out. Which would be a bit of a boneheaded move on intel's part seeing as how successful Ryzen has been and that you can pick up a cheap B350 board and still get some decent overclocks given the fact that all of their cpus are unlocked.

Word is too that Ryzen 2 may be coming in February.
