I've got a busted ryzen 7 that I need to replace and i've already spent a good deal on new parts to fix a problem i've been having.

Ryzen 7 is slightly out of my price range right now the current ryzen 7 I have is a 2700x 3.2gz I can afford a ryzen 5 that's a six core processor with 5.2gz I was just wondering how much of a down grade I might notice losing two cores vs less cores with more power.

Nice! But do you have any idea about how a 8 core 3.2ghz would match up to a 6 core 5.2gz
Assuming the same CPU microarchitecture, the 6-core will beat the 8-core including multithreaded tests. However the only Ryzen 5 that can get to 5.2GHz is the 7600X (which is specc'd for 5.3GHz).

If you mean a 6-core 4.2GHz, which would fit the Ryzen 5500, then the 6-core would likely still win because of the IPC improvement over the 2700X.

Overall, you can't ask this question without saying which processors you're comparing. Each CPU microarchitecture has different a instructions per clock (IPC) performance, which affects if being clocked faster or slower matters.

If you are going to ryzen 5000 series from a 2700x, huge upgrade. I had a few years back a 1700 that I even overclocked. Upgraded to a ryzen 3600 and it was a noticeable upgrade. Get the ryzen 5 and be happy. Be sure you aren’t getting a socket am5 cpu for a socket am4 board. Also if you go to a 3000 or 5000 series from a 2700x, you’ll likely need to update the bios before the cpu will run.

That answers it, thank you.
