Sad CPU fan problem

My old 1.4Ghz athlon system 8KTA has always run hot so I grabbed a spare fan
from
work the other day. Big chunk of solid copper and a fan twice the size of
the standard athlon cpu cooler. I fitted it and re-started my computer. The
new fan
certainly did make a lot more noise but my cpu was 15C cooler. Very happy I
went off to bed. In the morning I checked it before going to work and the
machine was locked up but still running at 86C !!!! and the new fan wasn't
running. I left it to cool down and replaced the new fan with the old but it
didn't spin. I eventually used another fan header on the MB and everything
is back to normal. I found that if I gave the old fan a helping blow it
would spin on the old cpu fan header but only at 1000 rpm. What have I done
????

You have overloaded the fan header and damaged the transistor
feeding the power. Don't use that fan on any other fan header
but connect it into an HDD 4-wire connector which is able to source
currents higher than the header.

The damaged header probably is but its monitor pin is likely ok.

I've looked thru the manual and there is nothing about how much the fan can
draw amp etc. How do i find out. I think I'll look for a 3 pin to molex
convertor

I'd recommend you not ever try using that header again.
