A conventional bomb like that would never make it close to Israel, I believe they have the strongest air force in the world(I think, correct me if im wrong). They would need a missile to even hope if getting close to anyone worth bombing. And that trigger mechanism is a little more advanced.

Someday some moron is going to blow one up and kill an enormous amount of people -- the only question is 'when and where'. A bomb doesn't need to be launch or dropped...

If Iran was so stupid then all I can say is there's not going to be an Iran as we know it today.

All US ports have both X-Ray and Neutron detection before every cargo container leaves port. The problem is what happens if it detonates at port.

If someone wanted to smuggle in a bomb you would get it in someplace else e.g. Yacht or Plane.

In September, Chamberlain flew to Berchtesgaden to negotiate directly with Hitler, hoping to avoid war. Hitler now demanded that the Sudetenland should be absorbed into Germany, convincing Chamberlain that refusal meant war. Chamberlain, with France, told the Czech president that he must hand to Germany all territory with a German majority. Czechoslovakia would thus lose 800,000 citizens, much of its industry and its mountain defences in the west. In effect, the British and French pressed their ally to cede territory to a hostile neighbour to prevent annihilation.

Hitler then informed Chamberlain that Germany was about to occupy the Sudetenland and that the Czechoslovaks had to move out. The Czechoslovaks rejected the demand, as did the British and the French. Mussolini persuaded Hitler to put the dispute to a four-power conference. Czechoslovakia was not to be a party to these talks. On 29 September, Hitler, Chamberlain, Édouard Daladier (the French Prime Minister) and Mussolini met in Munich. They agreed that Germany would complete its occupation of the Sudetenland, but an international commission would consider other disputed areas. Czechoslovakia was told that if it did not submit, it would stand alone. At Chamberlain's request, Hitler signed a peace treaty between the United Kingdom and Germany. Chamberlain returned to Britain promising "peace for our time". In March 1939, Chamberlain foresaw a possible disarmament conference between himself, Daladier, Hitler, Mussolini and Joseph Stalin; his home secretary, Samuel Hoare, said, "These five men, working together in Europe and blessed in their efforts by the President of the United States of America, might make themselves eternal benefactors of the human race."[12] That month, Czechoslovakia ceased to exist, divided among Germany, Hungary, Poland, and an independent Slovakia.

What happens in 1 country or another or more than a few is no concern, until its so big, soon, they are us.

I gotta call bullshit considering this is what I do for a living, and I work with customs officials all the time.

This is the truth of the matter.

OMG this is why I question what you are reading sometimes, because it's off cuff remarks like this that spew ignorance and further incite its perpetration.

To be honest there is some truth to both arguments.

I've gone through vehicles scans. I've gone through TSA, I've gone through other military checkpoints.

As Oldmangamer said, there is a great portion of things not being screen properly. TSA being an easy example, I've carried on items I shouldn't have been able to dozens of times. I used to travel almost weekly and it was easy to get through there. Going across the borders isn't much different. Granted, I wasn't spewing out nuclear material but a little concrete and steel could easily allow someone to smuggle in a few pounds of uranium without detection.

I will dispute that the reason we haven't been attacked again on US grounds is not because they're not capable, but that it is far easier for them to attack our military and interests over there. Striking in the US will be difficult. The cartels know that if they help, they'll be doing themselves in both from a military intervention and that their drug trade routes will truly disappear. The cartels are both a friend and enemy to the US.

If you use enough Lead or Concrete then that would trigger the X-Ray scan. I'm pretty confident no one is going to get away with smuggling fissionable materials at US ports.

If anyone is crazy enough to detonate a nuclear bomb in the US then we won't be blaming 'terrorists' we'd be looking where to level a Country where the 'bomb' came from not to mention a bad ass wrath towards the entire County i.e. take over and 10X retribution.

I hope no one is that nuts.

So the x-ray is triggered. Someone is bringing in a concrete fountain they had designed in Mexico. Yep, its concrete. All the permits are there, they know where its going, who is buying it, etc. Everything checks out. 2lbs of uranium are stuck in the thickest area of it, enough to prevent detection.

This hasn't happened because producing that much uranium.. if it doesn't work the cost is too great. It would be much easier to detonate it on the border to ensure it occurs. But then it happens in the wrong place.

At this time the cost and risk is too high. It fissionable material was readily available like cocaine then it would be a worthwhile attempt... but it isn't, and until it is, it won't be.

As long as we can maintain the NNPT, we can keep control. Though, no one ever stays in control forever.

I think you need to research just how much concrete it would take to 100% shield neutron emissions, not to mention the X-Ray detection.

I really don't want to post a 'How to smuggle nuclear materials into the US guide.' I've already stated a couple.

Don't worry about or ports or typical border detection. My mother use to work for the DOD and I guess you need to compare budgets between the CIA, NSA and other sources we have to track fissionable materials. Worldwide it's tracked down to the mg.

I'm not worried about it. It was more or less a reason why it hasn't happened. DOD wouldn't have the necessary info on fissionable materials. They design the weapon systems used. I have friends who work at Lockheed/DOD. They design areas of the systems, they don't do anything to prevent that stuff. It all falls under other government departments outside of the DOD for that stuff. Well, I suppose they know how to prevent it in a military application, but not in the sense of detecting trace amounts of it being smuggled.

And it really doesn't take much concrete. :) Look at Japan or Chernobyl... that's a huge amount they had to cover up. Look at Fermi in Michigan.. It doesn't take much, especially for a small bomb.

You're confusing covering a reactor to reduce emissions aka lethal levels versus 100% stopping ALL neutron detection. The detection is so sensitive that daily at the ports the neutron detectors are going off from a large variety of shipments; typically naturally occurring Earth material with low radioactive materials {pottery, porcelain, granite, etc}.

DOD, I guess you know more than my mother who worked there for years...

So you're suggesting 'someone' is going to smuggle in grains of enriched uranium or plutonium which I assume was ground down from 'some other' core and then magically buy all of the 'parts' to assemble a 'bomb' not to mention recreating the 'cores' to ultimately create a working 'bomb' by an unknown 'bomb making expert.' That's so laughable, you watch too many movies. It's not like making a frigging pipe bomb.

Point-out where I'm wrong, you make up all sorts of erroneous comments then even when others point-out where you're dead wrong over and over you still blab out TROLLING comments.

I was one of the first people to comment and was invited to comment. The discussion was about "Salaries" and spun-off to wars and now nuclear bomb materials smuggled into to the US?! WTF?!

Calm down.. maybe you should step away from the thread. :) I said read the thread because you would see the point I've been making the whole time partly lines up with you. Yet, you're getting pissy because your mom told you classified information that you're now blabbering you know about (which is a felony on your mom's part) because she worked at the DOD (which doesn't mean much) and all the while on an online forum.

Really? Check yourself. :)

You're kidding, WIKI leaks blabbed anything here and a hell of a lot more, so I'm not worried about anything. Nor am I worried about anything you can freely Google in 2 seconds. Chemistry and Physics 101 explains the basic science so there's no secrets from me.

You really want to be a Mod, good luck with that. 😉

It is one thing to google it. It is entirely different to claim your mom told you something.. especially on an online forum... bringing you mom up, really? :)

What's the mod comment have to do with the price of chicken in China? If I wanted to be a mod, I would be one. I don't want to be one because I'd have to deal with people like you. 😉
