Samsung P2770H 27" 2ms LCD at Costco?

So I just picked up the new Samsung P2770H 27" LCD at Costco for $349.00.

I can't find many reviews for how it works as a gaming monitor. I currently have the Samsung 2232BW and it has a Samsung panel so the colors have been great.

This one at Costco that was on display said CT01 as a panel, so have not looked it up yet.

I also realize that some people notice no differences, etc. but was just curious if anyone has put one of these through the ringer yet?

I am going to upgrade my video card to a 5870 to support the 1920x1080 as I only have a GTX 9800 right now.

Anyway, any feedback or experience would be great.

I can obviously post my experience but I have no real experience knowing what to test so not sure how to provide any metrics-oriented feedback other than "I think it's good" or "it sucks" :)

Update: Ok, so it's hooked up and of course the first thing I did was check for dead pixels... None.

Colors are amazing as expected, and I can't imagine how this monitor is going for only $350, granted it's a Costco price. Seen it online up to $450.

I pushed this baby back to far part of my desk and the nice thing is (part of why I got it) is that I now fully sit back in my chair :) I used to creep up and keep bad back posture as my eyesight is fine sorta (no glasses) but my eye muscles I was told need to be 'trained'.

With this guy, I just sit back and take it all in :) Gaming is great so far but I will say at 1920x1080, I now have a reason to upgrade to the ATI 5870 :p

So all in all it's an $800 investment but I can't believe the picture and how going from a 22" to 27" is SUCH a huge difference. I now look over at the 22" on the desk next to me and it's weird to thing I was using that for so long.

We recently upgraded from a 32" crap TV (don't ask) to a 52" new Samsung TV we also got at Costco in the living room. We also added in a Blu-ray and Netflix streaming (amazing quality if you have good connection) and we comment nightly that it's like we never really watched TV before compared to what it feels like now after the upgrade.

I feel the same with this new 27". It shouldn't seem that 5" should make that much of a differnce or that 1920x1080 in a 27" frame should matter that much, but wow.

Also, the great part is I have the Costco 3 month return policy in case I change my mind and when using the Amex buying this, you get Costco's additional year warranty plus the extra year from Amex (called and checked with them) for a total of 3 years, all for $349.

Seems like this will pay for itself over time.

I'll post some pics later. playing with Magic Tune Premium right now...

I just got home from Costco and google this...I had one in my cart but put it back and wanted to check it first. Please post more on how you like it so far. I might run back and grab one tomorrow.

So far I like it - not sure what to comapre it to as there are not many 27" monitors at this price, especially with a 90 day super easy return policy :)

I bought it before looking up reviews (not many) simply because I knew I could bring it back if I wanted, and also really wanted to move up from 22".

The only things I dislike right now are the operating buttons.

Some people might think its sexy and cool but I'm more about function. The buttons are touch-sensitive, not actual mechanical buttons.

So sometimes they pick up easier than other times - maybe I'm not pressing hard enough or maybe just my unit. Of course once you set everything, you rarely go back in there other than maybe change modes (I leave mine on internet as good for reading and gaming).

The other usual good thing but now isn't - is that MagicTune or whatever that utility is lets you set/change most of these setting without going into the menu via the monitor, but of course Samsung is usually a year or two behind on supporting new video cards so it doesn't work with any newer ATI 5xxx cards and I don't think I saw any Nvidia 2xx and 3xx cards, so basically no upper-tier cards are supported.

The only other issue I have right now is that the monitor doesn't go into power save mode.

I changed the settings to kick in after 1 minute to test it - not sure if its the new Diamond ATI 5870 or the monitor.

The display goes black after a minute, but you can still tell it's active (i.e. an active black vs. off) so I'm not saving any eneregy and of course the monitor will continue to wear down.

Not sure if this is an ATI issue or a Samsung issue, but I'll return both if I can't fix it since I'm not turning my monitor on and off each time manually :)

I'm assuming I'll figure out the power mode thing. The operating buttons are just preference.

There is some brighter bleed from the top and bottom when in all black, forget the term for this. It's not bad but you can notice it... All monitors of this type seem to have some of it, and it's not flashlighting per se, just a little brighter along the top and bottom edge when in all black.

If I can't fix this issue with power, the only way to tell is to get another video card and another P2770H from Costco and swap both out.

I'll call Samsung as I know I'll get their tech support but Diamond is near worthless for theirs. I only bought this card because I also can return it and was waiting to see if Fermi is failure or not.

NOTE: The power off issue is an ATI driver problem. *shock*! No wonder I had Nvidia for years and going back to them as soon as Fermi comes out...have 25 more days before need to return this card :p

Yeah no problem. I really dig the monitor, especially in comparison to anything else out there.

Plus, if for whatever reason something catches my eye in the next 90 days, I can always move to that.

<3 Costco return policy.

P.S. One thing is for sure, I can never go back to the 22" Seem so small now :p

I'm exactly in the same boat as you mate! Currently on a Samsung 2232BW and 8800GTS 512mb.

I was wanting the Samsung T260 but it is not sold in Australia anymore, the Samsung 2770 isn't here and the 27" HP is not either.

My only choice are the Dell 27 inchers.. :(

I am using my brand new 2770H and I'm very happy with it.

Pros
Huge 27" screen... I couldn't see needing more for a desktop config.
Good colors
Good darks for a TN

Cons
Bright whites are slightly washed out - much to be expected from a TN panel.
Really bright out of the box.. I had to manually turn down my gamma from my Nvidia control panel about 15% to make it look right for me.


Overall - great buy for 350$.

Your other options as everyone should know are:
Buy something smaller
Buy something over 500$ with slower response time and better picture

This is the best TN panel I have ever laid eyes upon imo. I bought one of those Asus VW266, and the color was horrible, and the whites/darks were way too washed out for me. My friend bought the Asus monitor too - and he loves it(he is also color blind literally, but don't tell him I said that). I had to return mine, the color was so bad. Even my wife noticed it and she is not a computer person.

There are a million threads on monitor panel comparison. TNs are cheaper to make and cheaper to buy. They also have the fastest response time of any monitor. They have inferior color and lights and darks generally, but the new ones are getting pretty decent IMO.

Other panels have better lights/darks and sometimes better color, but can be slow.

Has anyone tried to use this panel as a TV yet?

I was curious if there were any picture size issues, and if the audio optical out works without processing lag.

If you were gonna use it as a TV why not just buy the 2770HD model thats meant to be a TV? Lots more inputs included DVI HDMI etc - and it includes speakers(that suck).

I've heard complaints about the viewing angle, and I think that may be an issue for a TV - unless you sit straight in front of it then its decent bang for the buck.

Thanks for the quick reply Adroid.

I am actually looking to use the P2770H primarily as a gaming monitor, but would also like to hook my digital cable box up to the second input. The reason I am not considering the 2770HD is that I have read many reviews that say it is not very good as a monitor at max resolution and the response time and contrast ratio are not quite as good. I am guessing they cut costs on the panel in order to add all of the inputs and crappy speakers.

Good thought on the viewing angle though, I will have to take that into consideration.

Has anyone had any experience with picture size or audio out?

I have had my eye on this monitor since it was released last year in Asia, and now that it is available I will probably be getting one soon. My internal Dual TV tuner card works great on my 22" LG, and I don't see why it should not also work great with this monitor. My computer is in my bedroom, and 27" should be a nice size to kick back in bed a watch a movie or TV.

One thing I gotta add here guys -

This thing is so bright I am gonna have to return it. I think its great and I like the color, but I noticed if I am gaming with it on my desk for several hours my eyes start to burn.

I think its too big / bright to be sitting close to it... I went back to my old viewsonic 22" which has better color and lights/darks.

If you turn the 2770H brightness down enough to where it won't hurt your eyes, then the colors are too dark too see... At least thats my experience.

If you don't mind a huge glowing pretty picture this might be fine for you, but carefull of the brightness!

hi arrpeegeer, can you comment on the pixel pitch of this monitor?
ive been looking around and thinking about getting a large monitor to replace my current 20 inch samsung 206bw. But i've read about how anything above 0.28mm or 0.29mm dot pitch, the image wont be as sharp. The P2770H probably have a dot pitch around 0.31mm. So is it noticable? especially when compared with your smaller monitor.

I know this probably depends on the distance from the monitor, but im usually pretty close to my monitor, and really got used to the sharp text im getting. The one i currently have is about 0.257mm

Its weird that I found different dot pitch spec for the P2770H on different sites, had to go to samsung and download the manual to confirm it

I have been reading the user reviews for the Samsung P2770HD. One user said the problem people were having (fuzzy fonts) was from connecting with the hdmi. He said that when he connected with dvi, the problems went away. Shouldn't be a problem for the P2770H, since is doesn't have hdmi

I've got a problem, though. I went to CostCo today to see the P2770H. They had it set up with a bunch of 23", 22", etc., on the same feed from one of the computers. The feed was plugged into the monitor's dvi.

The colors were very dull, and the image was fuzzy compared to the other, smaller monitors on the same feed. I wanted to primary use the monitor for cad, plus documents, Internet, movies, etc. The image has to be sharp. Is a dull, fuzzy image standard for this monitor? If so, I'll have to buy a smaller image with good resolution.

Just installed this yesterday.

PROS: Good general purpose monitor, easy to install using the Samsung driver from the support website. Nice colors. Dynamic Contrast setting works well for all applications.

CONS: Menu controls are a bit touchy. Can't adjust the height. Presets for applications such as text and internet are fairly useless.

Overall a good buy for the money, not high end but certainly very good for 95% of the applications I run.

NOTE: my fonts were fuzzy until I set the MagicBright to Dynamic Contrast - this cleared up all the fuzziness but the colors are a bit off for photos. The colors are more accurate using the text setting. Don't have time to figure out the exact settings to get both the colors and the fuzziness right.

To fix the fuzzy fonts set the MagicBright to Dynamic Contrast.

The damn power connected wont stay in! Its like there is a spring in the back of this monitor pushing the wire out =(. Also for some reason I can only get it to go upto 1900/600 on the resolution when connected to an HP dv7-3188cl notebook pc, which has a NVIDIA GeForce G 105M in it.

So back to CostCo this big beautiful monitor goes. Very disappointed.

I must add that I also experienced fuzzy text and extreme brightness when connecting with an HDMI.
