Hi,

I have recently bought a (second as I had the same problem with the first one as well) new Crucial MX500 2tb SSD and have installed it. However after about 20mins to 1 hour it will disconnect itself from my system and disappear from the file explorer.

Everything works for up to an hour, drivers up to date, windows up to date, ive tried multiple cables in all of the sata ports on my motherboard but nothing stops it from disconnecting and rendering itself unaccusable.
But I ran an experiment today by installing a game onto the drive and keeping it open in the background, and as of writing this the game is still running but the drive is no longer in my file explorer.

Does anyone know what is happening and knows how to fix it? As I cannot find any concrete answers anywhere.

My specs;

MoBo; asus rog strix b 450 gaming
cpu; Ryzen 9 5900x
gpu; radeon 6800xt
Ram; 32 gb corsair
other storage; wd black 1tb m.2 ssd, seagate barracuda 250gb m.2 ssd, seagate barracuda 1tb sata ssd

the crucial ssd is on the same power cable as the seagate
never heard of a diskpart ghost before

I was being a bit disingenuous.

So, you have all these other drives work fine and two of the exact same model of SSD won't work in spite of trying them with different cables, different power connector, etc. It seems quite improbable.

So, another thought would be a port restriction due to using (such as) an M.2, but that would be negated by using different motherboard SATA ports.

If all those situations are "true", then there has to be some other factor at play. Are these new drives? Did you get them second hand? tested in another machine?

Even if your power supply was to blame, almost assuredly you would see other signs from equipment that draws more power...unless of course that ONE connector is bad.

Do you have another drive to check where the two Crucial drives have failed?

my psu is 850w, i have gone through 3 sata cables, all 6 sata ports, i have no other sata power cables (but i have just now swapped the current one around so it is now using different connecters that are on it)

no other pc or drives to test with me, the drive shows up and works fine as i can trasfer files with ease and have installed a game on it and can run it off the drive.

they were both brand new drives i sent the firs one back as it had the same issue

After the drive disappears in File Explorer, what do you see when you look at Disk Management (Create and format hard disk partitions)?
its gone from there too, even though ive initialized the drive when i first put it in

Is hot swap for SATA set in the BIOS? That can cause weird behavior.

Have you checked the voltages coming out of this PSU? A high or low 5V or 3.3 volt may cause problems, but since most of a computer runs on 12V these days, it really only matters to SATA and Molex connected devices (Though PCIe still tends to carry 3.3, though I think it is primarily relegated to seeing if the card is slotted in before powering up, again for hotswap functionality that isn't an option on consumer boards)

im assuming its the same as 'hot plug' as it shows in my bios, it was on and i have now turned it off, but it was also on for my other sata ssd wit h no issue

There are no concrete answers since what your symptoms are, are quite unique.

Regarding fix, issue is either hardware or software.

If issue is software, i suggest that you format your OS drive and make a clean Win install. This will get rid of all software issues, including bloatware and malware (except rootkits). Clean Win install is free and doesn't cost you any money.

If issue is hardware, i suggest MoBo replacement. While rare, it has happened that SATA ports on MoBo stop working and/or work sporadically. Only new MoBo will fix that.

my psu is 850w

Make and model (or part number) of the PSU is?
Also, how old the PSU is, and was the PSU bought new or used/refurbished?
