Just like Apple: charge people to repair brand new products that are designed so that the users can't replace the part themselves.

Why do people worship this company?? They are totally irresponsible when it comes to the environment, designing their products so that they can't be user serviceable, support low wages and slavery by putting suppliers on 1 year 'probation' for bad wage practices, yes they dismiss suppliers instantly who are even suspected of breaking secrecy agreements, and beat down journalists who even get close to their production facilities. The OS is insecure and crappy, claiming to be superior because nobody bothers to write viruses for it. (Obscurity is not security!) Then they lock people into their software by making it impossible to transfer data to competing products.

I have a gen 2 ipod nano. when that dies, I'm never buying another Apple product again, regardless of whether I'll lose half my music library because it won't transfer. This company is the most evil company I've ever seen.

What they need is some competition. Maybe MS should come up with an Apple mode in their next OS, so you could run Apple apps in it. With some competition they would have to alter their business practices to conform to the rest of the world.

Was somewhat interested in the 3G version of the iPad, but this is a major FAIL on Apple's part...will definitely be looking at alternatives for a tablet purchase...looks like either a Freescale, JooJoo tablet or wait to see how the MS Courier turns out...

Well, this of course cannot be done if it won't power up, funny...

lol well I'm still not going to buy an i(anything), and I'm sure it will go over really well with the masses. Great Thank You Apple..... This is why the world going to end in 2012, oh wait it will be the sun that does that. :)

now what'say that an Apple employee won't go fraud happy with all these used iPads? I can see them on eBay, used iPad with personal data....real cheap.

Well, Google tried to compete and it has lead to a lawsuit and apparently a grudge of ill will so strong that Apple is willing to harm their own business out of spite. I would instead suggest what Apple needs is for their devoted followers start standing up for better business and consumer practices from the brand they are fetishizing. At some point they need to realize blind patriotism can lead to very bad outcomes and that questioning things you support is as important as things you may not.

[citation][nom]Naked_n_Happy[/nom]Is it me or is Apple's philosophy of sealing in batteries inside their devices one of the reasons the tech industry is so polluting? In this day and age of environmentalism, the last thing we should do is throw away an entire device because a single component isn't performing as well as it used to.[/citation]
Oh my...you are so right! I can't believe that there's still not some sort of regulation which prevents companies from this kind of absolute disregard for maintaining an environmentally conscious practice. Shouldn't there be a law against this sort of waste? Not to mention, why are consumers putting up with this? If my car battery died on my new(er) Civic, I'd be royally pi**ed if Honda would ask me to get a new car, with a replacement fee applied. What sort of company thinks that way...oh right...APPLE!

Out of bare-minimum consideration for consumers and the environment, this sort of practice should be forbidden by law, plain and simple.

Countless rich jerks are simply going to discard the device in 1-2 years, battery and all, when the novelty wears off or the battery performance starts to annoy them. They wont even bother getting a battery replacement, especially if it carries a significant cost. And when they toss the device, the battery wont even get recycled. Absolutely ridiculous.

Its disgusting and I hope apple gets sued, chastised, and publicly humiliated for this whole ipad fiasco.

Some of these comments, WOW. OK, for all you complaining about having not getting you data placed back in the replacement iPad I am going to suggest that you step back and think about it. Do you really think it's a good idea to send your iPad (or any mobile computing device) in for service loaded with all your personal information and NOT backed up? Seriously?! You would send your own laptop loaded with all your personal information into a service center after the horror stories of people lifes work being ruined doing just that? No, of course not. You are going to back it up and, if you have even some smarts, wipe the memory before sending it in.

Now it may be "completely dead" such that it cannot be synced even while siphoning USB power but that's really more than a "worn out battery" problem don't you think. At least that's been my experience, I've had plenty of gadgets with bad batteries but none so far gone I couldn't get the data off them by plugging them in.

Elstupidio your maybe thinking cell phones which, in my experience, is pretty much what happens to the 10s of millions of cell phones that go off contract and are replaced every year. They are tossed, very few recycled. I read that about 44,000 cell phones are discarded in California, EVERY DAY. Will the same happen with the iPad, I don't know. All the laptops I have ever owned (except one that was stolen) are still in service today with grateful family members. I cannot see any reason a device such as the iPad won't see a similar useful life once the "bored rich", as you put it, move on.

Wow, what a perfect analogy. +1

Uhhh.. you totally missed the point. The problem is not having to backup your data if you send a device somewhere for service. The problem is having to send a device somewhere for service just to change a dead battery!

Trust me, by the end of this year there will be many competitors, especially if the iTampon takes off.
A nice Android platform with user replaceable battery, SD card slot sounds good to me.

lmao, its Apple, what do you expect. You people eat up their products that cant be upgraded, or have the batteries changed. I never buy Apple.

Heres what they are counting on. You need your battery replaced, but instead of spending the $105 to do it, you will end up upgrading to the next version.. So in other words, every year or two you'll be buying a new iPad.

Greenpeace are a bunch of fascist. This is a fact - the creator of Greenpeace says the same thing. Look up the history of the organizations you support and think are credible.

Apple practices unfair business philosophies that apple fan boys love. Not sure why anyone would love any company especially one that practices unfair philosophies.

Apple only attracts the rich and snobby though so what's a 105 dollars to these people?

I'm always amazed how people see things. Apple's policy on batteries is to ensure the proper recycling of hazardous materials. This policy keeps batteries from ending up in our landfills, polluting our environment.

it is just to kill jailbreaking.

batteries are suposed to fail, maybe this time they are made so they will fail quicker than slower.

if your ipad is jailbroken, it wont get new battery from apple, just because it is modified.

will you jailbreak an ipad knowing that if batery fails (and it will) you cannot fix it?

i thought so

I don't think I missed it, I chose not to deal with it. Obviously, if you cannot bear to part with your device for a few days for a battery replacement then you should not buy an iPad, or any device that has a battery that cannot be user replaced. I see no point in arguing with you if you have pre-determined that built-in batteries are the spawn of Satan. All the data I can find shows that iPods and iPhones have a low hardware failure rate in general, especially those without an internal hard drive. Will a lack of user accessible internals lead to a lower overall incidence of hardware malfunction down the road? I imagine some/many of the iPad competitors will choose built-in batteries (like the JooJoo). My personal feelings towards it are good as long as you are buying from a company that has a decent system in place to deal with it, (i.e. will the parent company that makes the JooJoo be around in 4 years to replace the batteries or will all the owners be screwed?). That is coupled with my own experience that battery failure is real but typically (not always) happens gradually enough that a person can plan around the replacement if one is indeed going to get it repaired, unlike my car battery :)

What?! You are kidding, right?!
Apple don't have to seal the battery and then require to ship the entire device burning bunch of fuel to replace the battery. It is far more efficient to ship big number of batteries to Apple store. And give $5-$10 credit for the old battery in order to ensure that 99% of old batteries are return for recycling. And I am 100% sure that every city, where Apple store is located, already has facility to collect old batteries for recycling if Apple don't want to deal with that.

I don't support Greenpeace at all. In this case Apple and Greenpeace are on opposite side of the scale, so if they get into fight and cancel each other at the end I am for it. 😉

I never liked Apple - with their 'double price for mediocre hardware' philosophy. So, iPad continues the Apple's appalling tradition- no real shock there.

You know, I'm really tired of biased articles. This is supposed to be a news piece, not an opinion piece. Whether it was geared towards Apple, Intel, Microsoft, or whatever, set the facts straight:

- Apple has long been criticized by some, but applauded by others. An enclosed battery requires the replacement of the entire device, but allows for longer battery life, sleeker designs, and more room for internal hardware that has not been taken up by space required for a removeable apparatus.

- For what amounts to a slightly higher price than a general batter replacement from the original manufacture (not counting 3rd party batteries), Apple will replace the ENTIRE iPAD with a BRAND NEW iPAD. How is this a bad thing? After years of scratching up your iPad, possibly dropping it, etc. Apple sends you not only a replacement battery but a replacement unit?

- Your data is quickly and easily backed up, and most users sync their iPad on a semi regular basis anyway. This is virtually a non issue, and something people should do anyway.
