Yup you got it right techd2, they have come up with a plan to soak more money out of you if your
Ipad batterys go dead. They can probably replace those batterys and reassemble your pad for 60 bucks
and the other $ 39.00 goes right into their profit shareing program. You have to admit, their pretty creative
on how to get you money.

who cares. people will still buy it, people will love it, and other companies will copy it (with removable battery with 1/2 the life). Enjoy your complaining about apple,
[btw isn't that another windows update to install another layer of security check to make sure you're using a legal copy of $400 windows software?]

Yes, you will beable to change your own batterys just like you can in an Ipod or Iphone. You just have
to be careful and you will have to buy your batterys from a third party, but you will void your warrenty by opening it up. I replaced my own Hard Drive in my Imac and i called them and asked them something and they were totally mind boggled that i went into my imac and they were quick to tell me my warrenty is now expired. I was quick to tell them i don't care i'm not paying them $ 100.00 an Hr. to replace a hard Drive. There is no reason why they can't have that Hard drive on the edge so it can be removed by takeing out a few screws, i've seen it on laptops so it can be done. The Ipad is no different, those batterys could be put in a slide out tray on the edge. But no.

Apple warranty? what is that? I never heard of it. When i first bought my 15gig ipod in 2003, 2 months after purchasing, it was always freeze at random times. the only way it would turn off was when the battery died. I was stupid enough to buy the 50 dollar apple care. When i sent it in to get it fixed they said nothing was wrong it. Well you know how these stories go. I went through all the way to their management customer relations and they finally had some one look at my ipod and finally did they admit they saw something was wrong with the logic board.
My point is Apple warranty services is a a joke and if you have the time and will to press your case with them you just might get them to actually honor the warranty that you purchased. But why would anyone want to go through that, why should they when they paid for it?

Since then i never bought their lame warranties. Through tutorials and trail and error i learned to fix my ipods at little to no cost.
You guys should try this. Just my 2 cents

[citation][nom]elstupido141[/nom]Out of bare-minimum consideration for consumers and the environment, this sort of practice should be forbidden by law, plain and simple.Countless rich jerks are simply going to discard the device in 1-2 years, battery and all, when the novelty wears off or the battery performance starts to annoy them. They wont even bother getting a battery replacement, especially if it carries a significant cost. And when they toss the device, the battery wont even get recycled. Absolutely ridiculous. Its disgusting and I hope apple gets sued, chastised, and publicly humiliated for this whole ipad fiasco.[/citation]

The Dodge Avenger and it's sister car, the Seabring, from a few years ago had to have the intake manifold taken off and the intake gasket replaced in order to change the spark plugs, and there was a Honda model in 2005 that had to have the bumper and right fender taken off to change the battery.

Cars are not new to this problem.

Not that I don't think the whole iPad execution is ridiculous from start to finish, but it occurs to me that at least Apple would be in a good position to recycle or refurbish iPads this way, rather than leaving it up to the customer who would probably just junk it (maybe after letting it sit around in the attic for a few years). I don't think this is necessarily going to lead to more e-waste: if anything it has the potential to reduce it.

That said, $100 shipping and service for a problem that could be fixed by making the battery replaceable? No data back-up even offered? Pretty lame.

oncall -- So you are saying that the iPad is a luxury entertainment device and no one should count on it for use as a business tool of any kind? I did not know this.

If not having a user replaceable battery makes it ineligible as a "business tool" then I guess you are correct. I am not sure what gave you the idea that Apple was targeting the "enterprise" with this device anyway? This is Tom's Hardware after all. Still, I am sure many people will find ways to use this device as a "business tool" anyway.

[citation][nom]OvrClkr[/nom]Quote :"Before you submit your iPad for service, it is important to sync your iPad with iTunes to back up your contacts, calendars, email account settings, bookmarks, apps, etc."Well, this of course cannot be done if it won't power up, funny...[/citation]

When you sync/backup, you plug it in via USB... it turns on.

[citation][nom]stratplaya[/nom]And yet for some reason, Apple is the corporation of choice for those leaning left.[/citation]

Such an ignorant comment. I live in Alabama and see a ton of rednecks with Apple products. I'm a liberal and I can't stand how dumb Apple's practices are. Stop being such a douchebag.

[citation][nom]CTPAHHIK[/nom]I did not expect that I would have to sync iPad to iTunes. I don't sync my laptop or netbook to anything. Is iPad nothing more than over sized iPhone?[/citation]

No sir, it's less. It doesn't have a phone.

Apple says they do all this non-removable battery BS because they can make the batteries larger without having to make the machines larger and that means more battery life in a slimmer machine.

I'll still take a slightly fatter machine with a battery I can replace on the road over something where my battery is permanent. It's planned obsolescence at its worst. They say that the battery will last roughly five years in a macbook pro under normal duty... I know people with Apple laptops twice that age that still function, of course, those batteries are removable so they might be on their second or third battery already.

[citation][nom]Regulas[/nom]I think you have it reversed. By doing this Apple ensures batteries do not go to the dump. I am sure they have a battery replacement centre and instead of making you wait they replace the device and re-service/recycle your old one. What about your data, I guess you back it all up to a PC or Mac then wipe the iPad data before sending it in. Still this concept is a no go for me, too expensive, no third party batteries available for probably $29.95.I take my old batteries to Radio Shack who takes any battery and send them in for recycling.[/citation]
Whatever Hippie, I throw all my batteries into the creek on pearl street in Boulder.

I'm actuallly somewhat for sealing in the battery. It allows something to hold a better charge in the same area allowance. You can't take the battery out, but you get 10 hours of use instead of 8.
The charge however is ridiculous. I hope they actually refurbish them, instead of just throwing them away.

I have you know I am retired military Master Sergeant and a conservative. Contrary to what the liberals say about us conservatives, we actually care for our planet too but we are not extremist kook's about it like the tree hugging leftists. Al Gore anyone?

What happens when it doesnt turn on?? I have an iphone rev 1 that had this same issue, the only problem was that it would not turn on regardless. Meaning if the battery is dead your device will not power on regardless if it is plugged in via USB or not. Now lets say the battery has 2% sustainable power then yes it will power on via USB 😉

Another reason not to buy one. Unfortunately the mass of consumers sucked in by the cool factor of the iPad won't stop to ask the important questions. The only thing that makes Apple customer focused is their unwavering lust for the contents of our wallets.

Honestly, anyone dumb enough to buy an Apple iPad deserves that kind of treatment.

I think this move by Apple is environmentally sound as they are attempting to recycle iPad devices.
