ok, i'm posting this for two reasons: 1, i'm avoiding things i should be doing...2, that newbie thing below my name is just ugly.

i love amd, unconditionaly and unreasonably. i will argue with an intel supporter 'till i'm blue in the face even if i don't have a valid point (although when backing amd one rarely doesn't ;-)). i will be one of the first in line to get a 64 bit processor (and pay through the teeth for it)...i'm just not sure that i can wait untill mid 2002. i think i'll ignore that date in the comdex article as a misprint....

i think i prefered "stranger" to this "newbie" status stuff....

I can wait for 64 bit. Even if they came out tomorrow, it's not like any software would work with it (work well?).

ok, so I'll get member status....how? isn't that just based on the number of posts I make?

I just figured it was an accurate descriptor of me! I am pretty strange.... 🙂

Right. Don't you think that the companies that make processors should jump right ahead to 128 instead of 64? That way we wouldn't need to goes trough the whole "transition" crap once again in a few years.

As long as there is competition - all is good. I may favor AMD but I still like to see Intel do well.

The good thing about the Hammer series is that you can buy it when there is little or no software that uses 64 bits, because the hammer is also 32 bit...... of course the Intel version will be pointed to 64bit more and will suck at 32bit applications.

All hale Hammer. It's rule supreme! (We hope anyway. :) )

The Jolly Wizened Oaf!

The Hammer still uses the x86 architecture so there will be few legacy problems. The strongest point to getting a Hammer is their ability to execute 32 bit code. That is why Intel will become the next IBM. Intel will not be Intel compatible. Intel has always used the x86 instruction set and therefore they can run old software just as fast or faster than their predessecors. Just wait time will prove me right, and if it dosen't, I can always change my handle to 'Odysseus' (they will be non the wiser)!

Maybe it's just me, but I think 128 bit would be pointless. Do we really need to work with numbers that large? Wouldn't it just be better to have a dual 64 bit system than a 128 bit sytem?

I mean I could see the point of going from 8 to 16 and from 16 to 32. And I can even see some point to going to 64. But beyond that seems pointless, at least for now.

Me, I'd rather see a variable bit system that optimizes itself for data streams of adjustable size. Now THAT would be intelligent engineering. Computers should be smarter, not just bigger or faster. Finesse beats brute force.

- Anything can be fixed with duct tape, a swiss army knife, and WD-40. :)

Well, you can check with the mumblies at CERN, but as I recall, 64 bits should be just about enough to address every Boson in Known Space. It will only be when you want to keep pointers to all the Fermions and neutrinos that you'll begin to run out...

Yea, but a few years ago, who would've said we ever will need 128MB of memory? Or a 1Ghz processor? Or a 20GB Hard Drive? Not many. If the technology is there, it will find a use.

128 bit has nothing to do with it. The 64 bit Hammer will run 32 bit apps very well, unlike the Itanium. AMD will keep the x86 instruction set by releasing the x86-64 to replace the x86-32 instead of Intel releasing the IA-64 to replace the x86-32. I just thought that Intel is making the same mistake IBM made with the PS/2.

PS/2 wasnt necessarily a mistake. Granted it nearly killed IBM in the end, but it was also the best selling desktop machine of all time. Only IBM's decision to make people pay to use MCA hurt them in the end. So it seems more likely that RAMBUS will be the next IBM in my opinion.

On a personal note tho, if more PC's were made like PS/2s the world would be a better place. I have yet to see a PC so blatantly bomb proof. I have one in the spare room. 12 years on and its still going about its business. Not even the millenium bug could kill it (admittedly it does still think its 1996).

never thought to buy a cray system (and pay through the teeth for it)?
