SC2 Laggy On Quad-core Laptop With Radeon HD 6720G2?

Hi, I honestly have no idea what's going on. I was playing a starcraft 2 mod called Marine Arena, and the entire game I was lagging extremely bad (less than 5 fps), while he was getting around 28FPS at the lowest. It was un-playable. I had all the settings as low as they could go.

MY Laptops specs:
CPU: AMD A6-3400m (Quad core @ 2.3GHZ)
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6720G2 (Dedicated 6650M with 1GB GDDR3 in CROSSFIRE with Radeon HD 6520G)
Ram: 4GB DDR3 1.33GHZ


His Laptop:
CPU: AMD Turion 2 @ 2.4GHZ
GPU: Integrated Radeon HD 4250
Ram: 4GB DDR3


I honestly have no idea why. I should be getting way better FPS in this. It has to do with the processor. I know it does. I tried Sc2 on High, and Low, and I got the same FPS. so I kind of narrowed it down to the processor. I set the process (SC2.exe) to Very high, and it didn't change anything. Btw, I can play crysis 1 on Medium with over 30 FPS. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

All I can say, is that I have the game and I have played marine arena, and it can get quite laggy at times (due to how many marines are on the screen, sometimes theres thousands which can really lag you. Also, if your watching them fight (you have your screen hovered over that) its going to lag you more than if you were to view the edge of the arena (no action). Your CPU might've also been overheating (as not a lot of pressure would be put on the graphics cards due to the high quality of them, and well would be able to run the game easily). So check out your CPU temp, clean out your fans, and if all else fails take it in to your local computer store...

He was watching them fight, and I was looking at nothing. He got 25 fps, I got 2. My laptop is 2 weeks old, CPU is NOT overclocking.

I meant over-heating. It was at around 50-55 celcius.

All I can say is that Gman might be right (gpu overheat) but I think it might be your psu... if your trying to process that many things at once, and you dont have enough power going to your components, they cant work at full capacity. so can we have a comparison of what your psu was compared to his? On laptops it tells you on the brick on the power bar...

My PSU's output = 19V @ 4.74A
His Psu= 13.5V@ 3.5A

What about the GPU, was it overheating ?

I'm 99% sure it's not related to overheating. Changing the graphics settings doesn't change my FPS, but the Air coming out of the laptop is only slightly warm.

Yea.. I think Gman is right, as the PSU seems to be fine.... your fans might be clogged with dust or something so all the hot air is building up inside, and none if it is really coming out. Just try playing the game again (same way) and monitor GPU temp this time, and well post it 😛

That is your problem. Marina arena is a beast, 8 players in a confined space with a very high unit cap. SC2 only uses 2 cores and yours just aren't fast enough.

I'm actually not too sure about that. Each core has a load of around 50% or so. The cores underclock themselves at 1.4GHZ usually, but can scale themselves up to 2.3 The problem is, is that they never go up to 2.3. I went under the AMD Vision Program, I also downloaded k10stat, but the cores dont stay at 2.3. they usually go instantly back down to 1.4. Even in a normal game, 1v1, I get 35 fps, and on a 2v2, I get literally the same amount of fps.

Hmm, things must have changed since I tested my e8500 vs my q9550 on the beta.

Maybe there is some kind of power saving feature you need to turn off? There must be alot of people with the same problem, seems like 2 out of 3 marina arena games gets ruined by some horrible lagger.

I ran SC2 with a AMD 9950BE Quad Core @2.6GHZ and the game was laggy and not playable with large battles, Once I OC'd it to 3.0HGZ it ran great....but at last I had to go down to 2.8 because of my new video card...but it is very playable 2.8GHZ (this is all on a stock cooling)

since you have 2.3GHZ proc, it won't cut it for SC2.

SC2 only Supports Dual Cores, so you can OC yours and it would be faster.

Doesnt make sense though how his friend is doing so much better than him... I had a computer with the exact same processor as his friend, and a bit of a better graphics card, but I lagged like hell in marine arena when there were tons of guys.. Yet he has much better specs... somethings fucked :/ Idk just take it into the store is my only suggestion now 😛 see if somethings fucked up inside

Check your power saving settings are on full power

are u using asus A43ta? if yes then try press fn + space bar until u can see High performance appear on ur screen. And also remember to set ur switchable graphic to high performance on ur game. one thing u should keep in mind, 6720g2 in Some game performance may even degrade by 10-15% compared to using only the APU graphics card. according to this link http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=519&graphics=Radeon%20HD%206720G2

so, u should try not to crossfire ur gpu to see if any performance increase or not.


if u are not using this model of lappy then try right click on ur wallpaper, u might able to find some configuration at there.

Make sure you're plugged in and are not on power-saving mode as well. Oftentimes laptops will try and conserve battery life by scaling back the gpu and cpu loads.

I have the same laptop and I play SC2 I think you problem is that your CPU clock speed is 800-1400
look go to AMD VISION Engine Control Center - Click on Performance tab - CPU Power - Than here you want to set your speed to a steady 1.4Ghz (I recommend you do it on battery only and plug your laptop when you want to play)
