[Windows ME, IBM 75GXP 46.1GB] Whenever I boot up, Scandisk will automatically run, saying that an improper shutdown was detected. It will run at EVERY load of Windows, just before it asks you to login to Windows. It runs whether I completely shut down and reboot or if I just do a simple restart of the system through the start menu. In other words, it loads whenever Windows loads, always saying that an improper shutdown was detected. Has anybody else come across this problem? Is there a way to fix it, or a way to DISABLE Scandisk from running automatically every time Windows loads?

Yes, I have encountered this problem. If you go to the WindowsUpdate site, there is an update for IDE Hard Disk Shutdown, or something along that line. Basically what is happening is the system shuts down before the Harddisk can write the information stored in the Harddisks cache. The patch will delay the power down for about 2-3 seconds, allowing for a proper shutdown. Microsoft reports this problem does not effect Windows 2000, just Win ME.

I already have that patch installed. But anyhow, thanks, and I'm reinstalling it now to see if anything gets better.

As-yet-undetected bad sectors on the drive can also cause those symptoms. Try running a thorough scandisk, including surface test.

Reinstalled the patch, but it didn't fix the problem. I will try what Dave suggests when I have time. But is there any way to disable Scandisk from autorunning like that?

Arrow, here is the fix for you to DISABLE scandisk on a reported bad shutdown. Go to Run, type MSCONFIG, when this box pops up click on the ADVANCED button on the lower right of the GENERAL tab, in here you will see an option to disable scandisk on a bad shutdown, check it, click OK or APPLY, and restart. On the startup tap you will see all of the programs that actually load when you get into Windows, most of them are WinME junk for the system restore, etc... but anything that presents an icon in the taskbar will be here, so uncheck them if you don't want it to load.

that didnt really solve the problem. There is a reason why the scandisk keeps running. you might want to look into that some more before you forget the problem, but then again with Windows who knows what might happen ;)
