CPU: Intel Core i7-10700
iGPU: UHD Graphics 630
dGPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060
Motherboard: B460M DS3H AC
Drive: SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe 4.0
PSU: CORSAIR - CX-M Series CX750M

When plugged in turn my screen off after 30 minutes
When plugged in put my device in sleep after Never
I'm assuming it may be some driver that is doing this. recently ... coincidentally I have this unknown device warnings in device manager under USB.
  • unknown usb device (port reset failed)
side note: I use the Netgear Nighthawk A7000 AC1900 Dual Band 802.11ac WiFi USB 3.0 Adapter for my wifi ... it's plugged into a 3.0 usb on top front of PC.
that never gave problems though.

Here are drivers:

drivers

any ideas?

Hey Tom,
Under 'Power Options' which power plan do you have selected. e.g.
- Balanced
- Power Saver...etc
Also...
Have you tried getting windows to search for the drivers online to possibly repair the "unknown device" problem?

you go into 'device manager' and it will show all installed computer devices. You then right-click on the 'Unknown device' and click update driver and follow the prompts to let windows find the driver for you and let it search online t see if i finds anything.

If no luck the you can unplug each USB device and watch the device manager screen to see when the unknown device disappears from the list as an unknown device. At least then you will know which device is causing that error.

Has your PC ever had issue waking from sleep mode before these recent issues? If it is suddenly having issues it would be prudent to test your RAM kit with a Memtest.
No, never. I am running Memtest now. How many passes do you suggest? John Carrona, who is one of the best BSOD specialist in the business (the other being John Griffith at Sysnative), recommends at least 3 passes. Some say 8 runs. thanks.

I did unplug my Neatgear A7000 wifi usb while watching device manager and the error drivers went away. haha~! not sure if that is causing anything.

I ran the test... 4 runs and all good ... 0 errors.

But I figured out the errors on the device manager USB controllers was due to a
VENTION 10Gbps USB 3.2 Hub, USB Hub with 4 USB A 3.2 Ports, I have plugged in.

The USB on my computer is 3.0 so I'm wondering, does the USB 3.2 hub create issues?

did it come with its own software to install?

If not, try the vention website for drivers. It may be that it needs its own software/drivers installed, not windows generic drivers.

I think it's fair to say the RAM is good to go. I am not convinced the USB hub had anything to do with the freezing, however, waking from sleep has stuff to do with USB devices so it's not impossible if you use a device hooked up to that hub to wake the PC from sleep. How do you usually wake the PC from sleep? Sleep is a bit complicated in the background as it has to do with sleep states which is reliant on the CPU and Motherboards themselves. Here is some info about sleep states. This could also have to do with the graphics driver/GPU itself. Make the display use the CPU's iGPU instead of the GPU as a test with sleep mode by plugging in the monitor to the motherboard's display output.

I will try this ... I will unplug my GPU from the monitor. I have a separate hdmi going from computer to monitor for iGPU.
One thing I did notice this morning when trying to wake it up, I used keyboard and it worked. it came up, but the mouse was not working. task bar could be seen on bottom. I could hit cntrl + alt + del ... and task manager was open on bottom task bar. not on screen though. interesting.

@Tommy Sawyer

Look in Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer.

Either one or both tools may be capturing other error codes, warnings, or informational events related to the waking problems and sreen freezes.

Start with Reliability History. Much more end user friendly and the time line format may reveal some pattens.

Event Viewer requires more time and effort to navigate and understand.

I took a look in Reliability History this morning when it happened and it just has "windows not properly shutdown", when I hit restart button.

I see a crazy amount of Device Setup Manager errors in the Event Viewer ... like every minute.
errors are like:
Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 for container '{F813F412-299E-11EF-A645-18C04D88BA68}'

like a device is trying to setup, but failing. it started at midnight.

also I see this:

The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Secure Boot is not enabled on this machine.. For more information, please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2169931

Look in Task Manager > Startup for anything that you do not recognize being launched at startup.,

Also look in Task Scheduler for any thing being triggered either by time or some process that is started or stopped.

Then try "dism" and "sfc /scannow"

https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-use-sfc-scannow-to-repair-windows-system-files-2626161

Be sure to back up all important data at least 2 x to locations away from the problem system.

Ensure that the backups are recoverable and readable.

So I believe I narrowed it to the GPU and probably the driver... I did what you said, I unplugged GPU HDMI from monitor and it woke up without any issue. I plugged HDMI back into GPU slot on back of pc ... and was frozen screen again. haha!

So should I redo drivers for RTX 3060, or should I roll back some, etc.

I would use DDU to remove your current drivers and install the newest driver for your card. Here is a short guide if you are unaware of how to do this

So I think I maybe go it ... but it's still hard to fix. many sources out there saying different things.
I believe it's the power plan, when switching it to "high performance" it happens. In balanced it doesn't happen.
Some sources say to go into advanced settings when switching and go to PCI Express - Link State Power Management - and switch "OFF"

I tried it, and I could open things on the bottom task bar ... but still couldn't see them come up on the big screen. (see attached)

some say to try:

Check your Drivers in the device manager:
1. Open the Start Menu, search for "Device Manager" and open it.
2. In the Device Manager, search for Intel Management Engine Interface.
3. Right-click and select Properties.
4. Select the Power Management tab.
5. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power."
6. Restart and check if the issue persists.

Try to disable Fast Startup, follow the steps below:
1. Open the Start Menu, search for "Control Panel" and open it.
2. Go to Power Options in the Control Panel.
3. Click "Choose what the power buttons do"
4. Click "change settings that are currently unavailable"
5. At the top down below under the "Shutdown Settings" section you will see "Fast Startup" uncheck the box and click OK.
6. Restart and check if the issue persists.
