The screen goes black and fans go full power after 5-15 minutes running a game. Temperatures max at 85 degrees for the graphics card under full load
CPU barely gets to 50 degrees
When running benchmark tests GPU maxes out rather than CPU
When I remove the GPU and run without it the problem doesn’t happen

I have looked in event viewer but don’t really know what to look at other than warnings for the desktop windows manager warning with primary display device gtx 2060.

Then the error ones that say the system rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.

I built this computer for someone 3 years ago but haven’t been in to the computer world since so have lost touch and don’t have the spare parts to try anymore. I’m inclined to believe the GPU is faulty.
Spec is
gigabyte 2060
Intel i5 9600k
16gb hyper x
1tb ssd
650w corsair psu.

650w corsair psu
650W is the advertised wattage for the PSU while Corsair is the brand of the unit. What is the model of the unit. Is it 3 years old?

You might want to source a donor PSU(borrowed, not bought) from a friend or neighbor who owns a reliably built unit, with at least 550W of power to the entire system, then try powering the system.

You forgot to mention how you're cooling the processor and the make and model of your chassis.

try ddu uninstaller and reinstall latest nvidia.com driver

try the GPU in a different system

Check Windows integrity
open the command prompt as administrator and type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

clean boot

check the memory by running memtest.org usb autoinstaller (bootable USB flash drive)

check the hard drive for errors with its manufacturer´s tool and if available, update the firmware

use ddu uninstaller and reinstall the latest graphics driver

Yeah psu is 3 years old but a Corsair tx650m
CPU is water cooled with a 240mm rad
The case is a phanteks case but can’t remember which one. It’s got an itx motherboard in it. It’s very limited on space but has 5 fans. It’s always had to have fans high to cope with temps but has worked for the 3 years without issues
