SCSI Hard Drive???

While on ubid "early" this morning I made a bid on ,IBM36.7GB 10,000 SCSI-3 Ultra2 Wide HDD, and as you would know,I got it?!? I,m building a athlon 1.4/ddr gaming only system.
The question is..is this overkill, will it work?
Also if you could reccomend a control card it would be helpful too.

yep it'll work, and yes it's definitely overkill for a gaming machine. adaptec's 19160 seems like it would be fine

How mcuh did u get it for btw? Would have been better if u got 2 and used raid 0. Just kidding- the SCSI will certainly satisfy your data transfer needs.

Your hardware will be just fine, but for gaming the big decision will be on, what OS will you use???

Hmm, I have a feeling that'll be really pricy. It might be faster (and perhaps cheaper) if you get 2 30GB 7200RPM IDE hard drives and setup a RAID 0.

Hey it was late..but the price surprised me..$149 +9/and 99cents a pound=$12..its ground shipping which I think they said 4 to 8 days. Its drive only so I'll have to get a 80 pin cable.
I guess my op will be Win XP caus it had the word "game" in the reveiw.. I'm using 98 now and can't hardly say any bad about it from my experience, OK who's going to tell me I need 2000>🙂 Is there a prefered op with scsi?
The DMVS-36 sounds like a solid HDD but if I'm going that route I'm going to have to rethink some of my options on my new toy. Yeeeeaaaaa raid 0 .......

With Win2k/WinXP you can have a obsence amount of DRAM, up to 2GB I think with excellent memory management. However, not so with Win9x/Me...512MB is the limit. So, if you plan on a dual boot, keep this in mind. Good luck!

That's a hell of a deal. New retail on those is around $400.
SCSI's never overkill for anything. Once you go SCSI, you won't turn back. If you ever plan on running any operating systems than '95/'98/Win2KPro, you may want to consider a step up from the Adaptec 19160 - it doesn't support any of the server O/S's, which is not a consideration for a gamer, but you may go that way some day, or you may want to sell the card.
The Tekram DC390 U3W is a great choice. It's extremely competitivly priced and works with any OS.
And by the way, my Cheetah eats my 7200 RPM raid O setup for lunch.

SCSI works well in all OS's. I have a super duty system based on 98SE and lots of SCSI stuff. It's faster, about 20% faster than XP in games! And that's with the LAST prerelease version, the one that's supposed to be almost the same as the retail version.
