search msn from address bar

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize (More info?)

Hi Mike,

Reset IE search preferences to defaults using this registry fix:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

Additional Note:
A sudden change in search settings in Internet Explorer may be a caused by
hijackers. Search and homepage hijack issues are caused if the Internet
Explorer security settings are Low. Note down the Security tips from Mike
Burgess, in his site below:

Spyware prevention methods:
------------------------------
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Block AD/Spyware sites using HOSTS file [very effective]
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Spyware Blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Protects your system from a huge list of unwanted ActiveX controls. *You
need to update the database through the online update feature provided by
this software*

Then, download Toolbarcop from http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/toolbarcop.htm
and run it. From the Options menu, click "Increase Security level for
Internet Zone (Internet Explorer)".

Using IE-Spyad to enhance your privacy and security:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53 IE-SpyAd
blocks a huge list of websites and domains that can cause privacy or
security issues on your computer.

For an already infected system, you need these tools to remove the malware.

How to safe-guard my system from spyware?:

Note: Spyware removers are rules-based and are updated very frequently as
and when new malware is discovered. Therefore, update both of these tools
before scanning, very important.

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
SpyBot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

Download the latest versions of this tool *AND* also update the database
immediately before running a full scan. If that does not help, download
HijackThis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ Generate a log using
HijackThis and visit any of these forums below to post your HijackThis log.

Hello,

How do you reset IE so that when you type something in
the address bar, it goes to MSN search?

Thanks.

Thanks Ramesh however for some reason when I did what you
mentioned, it loads search companion and the Customize
Toolbar selector only.

I know what you are talking about because it used to ask
me if I wanted to use MSN search as my search engine
choice.

However after I removed all this spyware and hijacker
stuff on my computer I guess it removed that feature.

Do you know how to get those features back for IE 6 SP1?

Thanks again.

Mike
