Cand anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can find info on how to set up my pc (with win xp pro) so that I can access the files from anywhere ie a comp not physically on the network but through the Inet. Thanks a ton

You can use microsofts IIS, I think this comes with windows XP (proffessional version only). Install it by going to add remove programs>windows components>then find IIS and tick the box.

Once installed IIS can be accessed via control panel>adminastrative tools. To share a folder right click on it and go to properties, once IIS is installed a new tab will appear. This allows you to make it an FTP folder.

In order to access something over the net your computer will A) Need a static IP address and B) If you are behind a router you will need to configure port forwarding or a DMZ.

You can also use Apache and Serv-U and WSFtp(ftp server...) the 2 last one are not free.

You do have a stripped down version of ISS with limited capacity(user wise etc) with WinXP pro/win2k pro.

Check this <A HREF="http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1491" target="_new"> link </A> for a good guide to setting up and ftp server.
If you don't have a static ip address, you can use <A HREF="http://www.no-ip.com/" target="_new"> no-ip </A> to solve the problem
