I own the msi r9 280x. It was annoying out of the box with coil whine and had an overheating problem. I updated the bios from from here http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/146769/msi-r9280x-3072-131009.html and problem solved. I can't hear a thing and it runs great. The bios description even says " Updated BIOS by MSI, to fix overheating, VRM temperatures."
Hopefully this is helpful, I'm very happy with my msi.

Hmmmm what do your VRM temps look like now?

Also, I should mention that I am overclocking the card to 1120mhz as well.

Igor? Igor? Dude are you ok? Mesmerized by the R290 partner cards, like the rest of us? Until they wash up on our shores, you could add something to this " continually updated" article? I don't know, say on the subject of if the R290 will bottleneck your 8350 or early i5? Is the 280x the way to go if you only use 1080p? Is the cheapest 280x $100 worse than the most expensive? Just a thought as you continually update the article.

No, I am become deaf :D Read my articles about the R9 290(X) to learn why...

I don't know, say on the subject of if the R290 will bottleneck your 8350 or early i5?
I'm using an OC'ed 8350 only for my power measuring system and an early i5 I've seen 2 years ago for the last time.

Is the 280x the way to go if you only use 1080p?
1080p is the max for this 2 year old GPU. I'm playing at 2560x 1440 and 4K2K (currently I have a SLI with two Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti Windforce OC) but you need 2x R9 280X to play in this resolution with normal frame rates in normal settings (not high or ultra). Most buyers of R9 280X will play with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

Comments like yours are the reason why I have no attached benchmarks in this roundup. It is useless. I have 4 independend and different rigs in my lab to check out VGA cards. Jealous? :D

And finally a big secret: Yes, I'm ok. Surprised?

Especially for you: 4x GK110 from my collection, a very rare GTX Titan with custom cooler and OC BIOS included:

But not one of this single cards is able to handle 4K2K with usable frame rates in higher settings. :)

This is really simple:
The review was made in Germany and XFX "boycotts" us here. No samples, no support. For buyers in Germany it is strange enough, because there is no XFX office or RMA available. This is the main reason why XFX has an extremely bad reputation in Germany. And: I've requested samples so many times but I got no answer. I can only review what I get. If XFX is interested in - I have no problem to add their products. But It seems that XFX has a problem with us. :)

Not the only reason for bad reputation though.

They cheap out even more than MSI does on their entry level boards/

I completely agree with fat_panda; HIS coolers are quite cool, very quiet, and usually sold at slightly better prices than the competition. My last several cards have been HIS, and I just can't go back to paying more for an identical, yet hotter/noisier card.

Seems like the HIS model wins by a long shot when it comes down to temps and noise level. Can the his be over clocked to the toxic level? Only losing 3-5 frames per second compared to the fastest toxic card. Which the the eye couldn't differentiate anyways.

it can make a big difference if you're playing an FPS 60 and 55 is a substantial difference in esports, or any competitive gaming. I understand you're probably not talking about this low of a thresh hold but you're right when it comes to anything over 80 frames per second

They can burn in a fiery hell before I pay $400+ for a card that was originally MSRP'd at $300+... I wish that bitcoin would hurry up and die off already it's really starting to get in the way of gamers getting their hands on cards for decent prices.

yeah. At least there's cards that are being sold specifically for bitcoin might ease some demand on cards meant for gaming but man! It's ridiculous. Might go Nvidia since AMD cards are what miners flock to
