i currently have a
I7 4790
12 gb ram (upgrading to 16 soon)
MSI Z97 GAMING 3 MB
(replaceing an) 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

Will be playing at 1080p 32" monitor , want to run all games at 60 FPS on all MAX settings
should I get 1080 or 1080 ti?

no, the GPU is still pretty much capable
for your target, the 1070 is already enough for this kind of thing

although i have better suggestion:
hold your horses and stick with the GTX 970 (and the lower setting) for a bit more time
Volta's coming next year, and u can have a decent performance leap after this

if u still insisting on wanting to play Max settings @ 60 fps, as i said above, either 1070 or u can try to find a RX 580

No actually, the GTX 1080 might not be overkill for 1080p max settings. Granted, there's like a game or two only today that need it, but still, a 1080 is not overkill for 1080p max details. But I'd say stick to the GTX 1080, the 1080 Ti is a little too much(though Ghost Recon Wildlands does require a 1080 Ti for 1080p Ultra settings). A GTX 1080 would be my recommendation for max settings. You could wait for Volta, but it's a really long wait - it's not even coming this year, and no one knows when it'll be coming in 2018. If you are satisfied with the GTX 970's performance, however, you should wait. If not, a GTX 1080 would be my recommendation.

To my knowledge, Volta is workstation GPU's is it not? I don't believe these GPU's are meant for gaming or consumer usage, they may be but I haven't heard much about it

well yes, the one that's available for now is the workstation GPU
the consumer GPU is heard to be released next month so yeah, that's why i said next year mate :)

i dunno if what shektron said is right
but from what i know:
1070 can run almost everything at max settings @1080p
the 1080 is 25% more than 1070, so it should be more than capable [but at the case of lower resolution, it'll turn into a CPU-bound problem, especially on CPU-intensive games (big maps, lots of texture and stuff)]
1080ti would be an overkill + it'll already turn into a CPU-bottleneck in this case imo

i suggest u stick with either 1070 / 1080 for 1080p and go to 1080ti when u're planning to play on 1440p++
[even if ghost recon wildlands can only run ultra@1080p with 1080ti, i won't justify the extra 200$ for the GPU]

My whole thing is that I don't always have extra money so I was thinking about upgrading so I don't have to later on, to a card that is good and I won't need to worry about changing the card later on

Even then, I dont believe they will be releasing consumer Volta GPU's, they cost about $1000 to make, and only a small part of the market would buy them

Frankly, a GTX 1080 won't need upgrading for at least 3 years at 1080p. More if you are willing to go down on the details further. As and when new and more demanding games come out, you'll have to lower the settings to achieve the 60 FPS number. If you are willing to even go down till medium, I think the GTX 1080 can last 3 years. Take a GTX 980 for example - it's been three years since it launched, and it can still handle even 1440p in a lot of games. A GTX 1080 would remain the logical choice for you - it'll let you play at max details today, and will let you continue to play for at least 3 years more.

they cost $1000 right now coz on the workstation level, they're currently twice as fast as the Pascal based workstation GPU
they offers all the cuda cores that Nvidia can cramp up into the GPU (and for the sake of those content creators)
it also use HBM2 memory instead of the usual GDDR

here's the full spec for that workstation GPU, the V100:
12nm FinFET
21bn Transistor
815 mm2
5120 Cuda Cores
16 GB HBM2
900 GB/s memory bandwith

now if they didn't cost 1000$ or more, i would be really surprised 😱

if u don't keen on waiting for volta, there's a rumour of 1070ti: might worth waiting or checking, rumour said they launch at 26 Oct

k nice 1080 it is then , thank you all for the help, so after upgrades my pc will be
I7 4790
gtx 1080
16 gb ram
msi z97 gsming 3 MB
on a 32" 1080 monitor
😀 anything else yall might suggest upgrading / getting, would getting an ssd be good to get?

SSD would be a great addition
600W PSU at what efficiency? what brand and variant? u can't determine a good quality PSU based on the wattage only, power-wise it's good enough, but the quality might says otherwise, and i won't risk my almost 2k$ PC with some cheapskate PSU (if that's what u have right now)

each brand had their own good quality and bad quality one
so what's the series?

EVGA G2? G3? B2?

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/
u can refer to this tier list for or u can just mention it here :)

Can you tell us the exact model and series of the power supply? Quality of power supply can vary from series to series. 500W is the recommended power supply for the GTX 1080, but I would still consider a 600W, just to be safe.

I'm not sure on model or series its been about 3 years since I bought it and idk where to look for it lol, but if you think 600W then I can just upgrade to that , any good ones you know of?

a good 500w is already more that enough, but if u're looking to upgrade, i had a few in mind:

EVGA G2 / G3 650w 80+ gold
Corsair TXM / RMx 650w 80+ gold
Superflower Leadex gold

u can refer to the list above i gave u in order to find a good quality series, then, just pick the required wattage :)

lol, you opened two threads for this topic?

And still considering a GTX 1080 / 1080 Ti for a 4790 CPU on a Z97 board, using a screen with a 60Hz refresh rate?

smh

I have spent quite some time and effort in your other thread, trying to explain the facts to you.

You are either smart enough to understand ... or not.

In any case, no skin off my nose :)
