Shutdown problems?

I have been unable to shutdown my computer for many weeks now, and I have been forced to switch my PC off at the mains, which isn't doing my PC any good.

The problem arises after I follow the normal procedure of shutting down my computer. The PC then acts normally as if it's going to shutdown. After the 'Windows is shutting down' box goes off, all that can be seen is my background, and it doesn't shutdown, even if I leave it for 30 minutes.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

It would be greatly appreciated, because I have been tearing my hair out over this problem for weeks!

I have a similar problem. After I updated my bios on a Gateway P4 1.5 Ghz the system always restarts after i click on turn off. I could use some help. I just downloaded the microsoft software that was recommended to you. Gonna try it now.

I just resolved my similar problem. Turns out it was a BIOS issue. One of the components was set default to wake on. Once I disabled it everything works fine. Try looking for any "wake on" that is enabled in your BIOS.
